Kids love the dark when there's something in it.
That's the pattern on this list. Light shows, telescopes, frogs, fireflies, water that glows when you move your hand. Nine of the fifteen are stargazing, wildlife or bioluminescence trips, which is no surprise: our Night Score gives 40% to how much the night matters, and those tours can't exist in daylight.
The filter is simple and a bit blunt. A tour qualifies if its product page doesn't rule out children aged 8 or under, the researcher didn't flag it as unsuitable for families, and it isn't a pub crawl. We didn't take kids on these. We read the rules. That's why a few entries need a note, and I've given them one.

Good to know: Meets at 5:30 p.m. at the Starbucks at One Fullerton (Raffles Place MRT exit H); the river cruise, coach legs, water and guide are included, dinner is not despite one line on the page. Groups up to 35; hotel pickup costs more, and the tour can end at Lau Pa Sat for supper.

No minimum age on the page, which is unusual for a mountain trip. DAS Experience picks up between Los Cristianos and Callao Salvaje (or you drive), watches sunset at about 1,400 m on Teide, then lets everyone look through a 12-inch telescope. Adults get cava, and there's a free astrophoto. Warm jackets come only with the VIP pickup, so pack the kids' layers yourself. No toilets up there. $39 (€35) on sale.

What it is: A DAS Experience sunset at a Teide viewpoint at about 1,400 m, then a guided stargazing session with a 12-inch Dobsonian telescope.
Good to know: Sale price of $39 (was $45). Includes a glass of cava and a free astrophoto; warm jackets only on the VIP pickup option. No toilets at the sites, and in wind or cloud the group stays at the lower viewpoint.
After dark: Teide is a Starlight Reserve above the clouds, and the telescope session is only possible after dark.

Shorter, which matters with small children: two hours of telescopes and a laser pointer, starting 40 minutes after sunset by the Ermita de las Nieves. Its only age rule is about babies, no one under 1. $39 (€35). You drive yourself into the national park. Because the start follows sunset, check the time for your dates before promising anyone an early night. Sessions in English and Spanish.

What it is: Astroguide Tenerife's 2-hour telescope and laser-pointer session in Teide National Park, meeting by the Ermita de las Nieves.
Good to know: You get yourself to the meeting point (it is in the national park, so plan a car). Free photos included; English and Spanish. Not for babies under 1.
After dark: The session starts 40 minutes after sunset, when the sky over the national park is fully dark.

The family filter lets this one in because the page sets no minimum age. Read the menu, though: one Thai beer or a soft drink is included, and the night ends with a drink at Secrets Bar. It runs from 7 p.m. at Samyan MRT exit 2 through Chinatown, Banthat Thong Road and the flower market, with tastings big enough for dinner. Great for older kids who eat anything. Here because the page sets no age limit, which surprised me too. It's two hours past the places where women were murdered in 1888, told through the history of the case, so I'd save it for teenagers who ask for it. Meet the Street frames it as history rather than gore. $20 (€17.90) per adult today, from Aldgate Underground station. Groups are large, and the walking is moderate.

Bamboo Bicycle Tours ferries you across the Chao Phraya to the green Bang Krachao peninsula for a bamboo-bike ride at sunset, a Thai dinner and a boat trip to watch fireflies once it's dark. With a family, the van is the point. Ten memorial stops in three hours with a guide, and nobody walks the length of the Mall on tired legs. How the family list works
Three rules, then the Night Score. A tour must be marked suitable for families from its product page, must not set a minimum age above 8, and must not be a pub crawl. The survivors are ranked on traveler rating, review count, price per hour and how much the night matters, two per place at most. The scoring is laid out on how we score night tours.
No age limit doesn't mean suitable for every age. It means the operator didn't set one.
Two to check before you book
The Jack the Ripper walk. A murder case, told on the streets where it happened. Fine for a curious 14-year-old. I wouldn't take a 7-year-old.
The Bangkok midnight food tour. The food is the point, rated 4.9 by 2,925 people, but it includes a beer and ends at a bar. Older kids are fine.
Everything else on the page is built around something kids get excited about without an explanation.
Start times and bedtimes
The Singapore cruises start earliest: Omnicity picks up from 5:00 p.m. and CYT meets at 5:30 p.m. Anura's first walk in La Fortuna is at 6:00 p.m., and near the equator the dark arrives early all year; our La Fortuna page puts dark at about 5:42 p.m. in October and 6:27 p.m. in July.
Stargazing is the late one. Both Teide tours are timed to sunset, so in Tenerife's summer you're looking at a late finish, and the Gran Canaria trip runs three hours plus the drive. Bio bays are darker, and better, late. If your kids flag at 9, pick the sunset departure and accept a fainter glow.
Rainforest night walks with children
Four of the fifteen are wildlife walks or rides, and they're the ones kids talk about later. They also need the most prep. Every Costa Rica walk runs in rain and stops only for lightning. Reviewers keep repeating the same kit list: closed shoes, long trousers, bug spray, a rain layer. Sightings vary night to night, so set expectations: a frog is a win.
Child rates are lower on both La Fortuna walks. Monteverde's refuge walks often add a reserve fee on the night. More on the type at night wildlife tours.
What's missing: the Night Safari, Alcatraz and Mauna Kea
Singapore's Night Safari is the obvious family night and it isn't here, because the only reseller tour that cleared our bar scores 7.0. Don't book a tour. Mandai's own ticket costs $45 (€41; S$58) for a visiting adult and $32 (€29; S$41) for a child, and the tram is included. Trails and the tram start at 7:00 p.m. See our Night Safari page.
Alcatraz at night has a child fare of $35 (€31) for ages 5 to 11 on the Park Service's fee table, through the official ferry. The reseller ticket in our data scores 5.7, so it isn't ranked.
Mauna Kea is 13 and up on every tour, and City of the Dead in Edinburgh is 12 and up, so both fall outside this list.
Just below the cutoff: Astrophototour's big-telescope session on Teide (8.2, from age 5) lost its place to the two-per-island rule, and a Mirador El Silencio night walk near Arenal (7.8) would have been a third La Fortuna entry.

What age can kids go on night tours?
It depends on the operator. On this list the Gran Canaria stargazing tour is 5 and up, Astroguide only excludes babies under 1, and most others set no limit. Elsewhere, Mauna Kea tours are 13 and up and many ghost walks are 12, 13 or 16 and up.
Are ghost tours OK for children?
Some are. Reviewers call the Savannah Supernatural walk fine for kids about 8 to 10, and the Prague Nightwatchman walk is theatrical rather than graphic. The ghost tours page lists age limits.
What should kids bring on a night tour?
Layers for anything on a mountain or in Monteverde, closed shoes and long trousers for rainforest walks, bug spray, and a snack, because few of these include food for kids. Our what to bring guide has the full list.
Is Singapore's Night Safari worth it with kids?
Yes, but buy Mandai's ticket rather than a tour. The child ticket is $32 (€29; S$41), the tram is included, and the park is open 6:00 p.m. to midnight with the trails and tram from 7:00 p.m.
