Night Tours in Gettysburg

#1: Spirits of Jennie Wade, 7.5 Dark by 5:15 p.m. in December 10 tours ranked

Gettysburg has more ghost tours than a town its size has any right to. Two operators run most of the big ones. A third runs the two tours I'd actually book first.

Here's the rule that shapes all of it. The battlefield is closed at night. The National Park Service's compendium says park lands and roads are closed to public access from sunset to sunrise, and that includes the National Cemetery. A handful of through roads stay open after closing for commuter traffic only, with no stopping, standing or parking. So no tour walks you across Pickett's Charge in the dark, and if one implies it does, be suspicious.

What you get instead is the town. Baltimore Street, Lincoln Square, the old wartime houses, and two interiors that open only for night tours: the Jennie Wade House and the National Soldiers' Orphanage. Both cellars. Lights off.

Those two top the list. The rest are street walks, two midnight-ish investigations you drive yourself to, and a pub crawl I wouldn't bother with.

You go inside. That's the whole reason. Gettysburg Battlefield Tours spends 45 minutes in the Jennie Wade House, home of the only civilian killed in the battle, down to the cellar with the lights switched off, then 45 minutes outside. It's $20 (€17.90) with house admission included, which is absurd value, and it's capped at 10. Meet at 778 Baltimore Street, not the Jennie Wade gift shop. Steps inside; not wheelchair accessible. Reviewers say it repeats the daytime house tour, so do one or the other.

What it is: A night ghost tour by Gettysburg Battlefield Tours that spends 45 minutes inside the Jennie Wade House, the home of the only civilian killed in the battle, then 45 minutes outdoors.

Good to know: Capped at 10; Jennie Wade House admission included. Starts at 778 Baltimore Street, not at the Jennie Wade gift shop; steps inside the house, not wheelchair accessible. Reviewers say it repeats the daytime house tour, so do one or the other.

After dark: You go inside the Jennie Wade House after hours, down to the cellar with the lights switched off, something a daytime museum visit does not give.

Same operator, same $20 (€17.90), same cap of ten, different building. The 7 p.m. slot takes you into the National Soldiers' Orphanage and its cellar with the lights off, plus East Cemetery Hill. Check in 15 minutes early. It often sells out about 25 days ahead, so this is the one to book first if your dates are fixed. The basement stairs are narrow and steep. Reviewers are split on bringing kids under 12, and I'd lean no.

Three hours, 8:30 p.m. start, outdoor sites in total darkness, spirit boxes and EMF meters. After Dark Investigations goes to two or three locations such as Sachs Covered Bridge, and one wooded site the operator says is now closed to the public. $50 (€45) and up to 20 people. The big catch is that you drive your own car in a caravan between sites, even though the listing says private transportation. Activity isn't guaranteed. Its 157 reviews keep it below the two house tours.

It's the best-reviewed street walk here (4.8 from 745) at $30 (€27) with gratuities included. No interiors: Hotel Gettysburg and the Jennie Wade House are seen from outside. Groups can reach 25 and there's a lot of standing, so bring kids who can handle 90 minutes on their feet.

The most-reviewed tour in town, 1,106 reviews, and a lantern-led hour down Baltimore Street to East Cemetery Hill. Civil War Ghosts starts it in the front yard of the Brickhouse Inn. $26 (€23). It's exterior storytelling only, and groups go up to 35, the second-largest here, which is what drags it down with a 4.6 rating. Don't park in the Brickhouse Inn lot; they tow. Ignore the dinner and transport the listing mentions. It's a walk.

The battlefield after dark: what the park allows

Short version: you can't be on it. The park's hours page says the battlefield and roads, including the Gettysburg National Cemetery, are open from thirty minutes before sunrise to thirty minutes after sunset. The superintendent's compendium (updated July 23, 2026) says everything is closed to public access from sunset to sunrise, apart from NPS programs and a few leased houses.

Some park roads stay open after closing for commuter traffic: Buford, Doubleday, Howard, Hunt, Reynolds, Wadsworth, Seminary and West Confederate Avenues, plus Granite Schoolhouse, Millerstown and Wheatfield Roads. Drive-through only. No stopping, no standing, no parking. So you can't pull over at Devil's Den at midnight with a camera.

Two more rules ghost hunters trip over. Metal detectors are banned on park property outright. And the compendium bans using artificial light to view wildlife anywhere in the park.

That's why the night tours live in town, and why the investigation tours caravan between their own picked sites.

How to pick a Gettysburg ghost tour

Book a house first. The Jennie Wade House and the orphanage are the only night interiors on this list, they cost $20 (€17.90) each, and each takes ten people. Everything else is a street walk you could book the same afternoon.

Then add a walk if you want one. Ghost City Tours' all-ages walk is the safe choice with kids, and its 16-plus version is for adults who want the gore. Civil War Ghosts runs the cheaper, bigger, more-reviewed walks from the Brickhouse Inn.

The After Dark Investigations tours are their own thing. Three hours, real darkness, your own car, a lot of standing in the woods with a meter. If that sounds fun, the 8:30 p.m. one is plenty. The 11:45 p.m. one is for people who already know they love this.

The free version: Baltimore Street at night

Start in Lincoln Square. Walk south down Baltimore Street past the Farnsworth House and on to the Jennie Wade House. That's the route most of the walks follow, so you'll see the lanterns go by. Stop at the edge of Cemetery Hill and look up; the National Cemetery closes at sunset, so that's as far as you go.

Honestly, it's a good walk. But the town's stories are specific to individual houses, and without a guide you're looking at brick. Spend the $20 (€17.90) on a house tour.

Parking and getting back late

The borough's Racehorse Alley garage, 74 East Racehorse Alley behind the Gettysburg Hotel, is open and enforced 24 hours a day. It's $1 (€0.90) an hour up to $18 (€16.10) for 24 hours, with 356 spaces.

Two warnings from the tour pages. Civil War Ghosts says don't park in the Brickhouse Inn lot; you'll get towed. Ghost Walk Gettysburg's parking across the street from Unity Park costs extra.

We didn't find a late bus worth planning around. Walk back to your hotel if you're in town, or drive. For the investigation tours you need a car anyway, and you'll be driving dark country roads, at 3 a.m. for the Devil's Hour one.

When to go: dark times and cold

October is peak season and the groups show it; reviewers report crowded walks. Halloween falls on a Saturday this year, so book the house tours well ahead. It's dark by 6:57 p.m. and nights drop to around 49°F (9°C).

November and December are quieter and cold. Dark comes at 5:15 p.m. in December, so a 7 p.m. tour is deep night, and lows sit near 30°F (around -1°C). By January they're in the mid-20s °F. Dress for standing still, which is colder than walking. The park's comfort stations close for winter from mid-November, after Remembrance Day events, through March.

Summer is the opposite problem. In June it isn't fully dark until about 9:52 p.m., so early tours start in daylight. Nights are mild, in the 60s °F.

What to skip

The pub crawl, as above. And the two tours just under the line: Ghost Tour: History and Haunts scored 4.8 on our scale and the Gettysburg Haunted Tour by Bus 4.7, so neither made the ten. A bus can't take you anywhere at night that a walk can't, since the battlefield is closed.

Don't book two Baltimore Street walks back to back. They cover a lot of the same houses.

Which Gettysburg ghost tours go inside a building?

Two on our list, both by Gettysburg Battlefield Tours: Spirits of Jennie Wade, which spends 45 minutes inside the Jennie Wade House including the cellar, and Spirits Speak Orphanage, which goes into the National Soldiers' Orphanage cellar. Each is $20 (€17.90) and capped at ten.

Are Gettysburg ghost tours OK for kids?

Ghost City Tours' Echoes of War is built for all ages. The Jennie Wade tour is family-friendly too. Reviewers are split on taking under-12s into the orphanage cellar. Blood on the Battlefield is 16 and up.

For the orphanage tour, about 25 days ahead is typical and it often sells out. The Devil's Hour investigation is booked about 59 days ahead on average. Street walks are easier, but October groups get big.

How much are ghost tours in Gettysburg?

From $20 (€17.90) for the two house tours to $70 (€63) for the midnight investigation. Most street walks are $26 to $35 (€23 to €31).
