Chicago's best night view is from a boat. That's the short version.
The river runs through a canyon of lit towers, and out past the lock on Lake Michigan you get the whole skyline at once. Half of the eight tours we ranked are on the water.
But the top of the list is a pub walk.
The cruises score lower than you'd expect because their ratings sit in the mid-4s, and the Night Score cares about that. Meanwhile the Lincoln Park ghost walk with three bar stops rates 4.9 and costs about $36 (€32). Chicago is a thin night-tour city, honestly. Our researcher found only eight products that cleared the bar, and several promising ghost walks either rated badly or wouldn't say what time they start.

The 8 best night tours in Chicago, ranked
Every tour we scored in Chicago that cleared our bar (rated 4.4 or more from 50+ reviews), in Night Score order. Night Score = 30% rating, 10% review count, 20% price per hour, 40% how much the night is the point. How we score
The highest rating in the city, 4.9 from 333 reviews, and great value at $36 (€32) for two and a half hours. That's why it's first. Nightly Spirits sends a costumed guide with up to 12 people from Glascott's Groggery on Halsted Street through three Lincoln Park bars, ending at Lilly's. It's 21+, with a minimum of two adults per booking. Tip included, drinks not. About a mile on foot, which is gentle.

What it is: Nightly Spirits' costumed-guide ghost walk with three Lincoln Park bar stops, from Glascott's Groggery to Lilly's Bar.
Good to know: 21+; maximum 12; minimum two adults per booking; gratuities included, drinks extra. About a mile on foot.
After dark: Lincoln Park's old saloons and their ghost stories work best as a night out.

Lots of reviews (1,883) and cheap at $31 (€28), which push it to second. Empire Tours' historian guides walk you about 1.5 miles through the Loop, including the Palmer House lobby, with a 20-minute break at a gangster hangout, and finish outside the Congress Plaza Hotel. The gangster half works fine in daylight, so it scores lower on after-dark. The real catch: the page lists no start times. Check you're booking an evening slot. Under-7s go free.

What it is: Empire Tours' two-hour walk with a historian guide through the Loop, including the Palmer House lobby, ending outside the Congress Plaza Hotel.
Good to know: Under-7s free; not recommended with infants. About 1.5 miles with a 20-minute break at a gangster hangout. The page does not list start times, so confirm an evening slot. The same tour is on Viator (5669845P1, 4.7 from 100 reviews, $38).
After dark: Loop ghost stories and Capone-era history land better on an evening walk ending at the Congress Hotel.

A crime-scene bus tour at 7:30 p.m. from Pearson Street near the Water Tower, with a live guide, archive video and a mini mob museum on board. Rated 4.8 from 514, and at $55 (€49) for two hours or so it lands in the middle on value. It leaves on time and won't wait. There are no restroom breaks, which matters on a two-hour bus. A tip of $5 (€4.50) or more per person is suggested. Not wheelchair accessible.

The best view in Chicago, I think: down the river, through the lock and out onto the lake for the lit skyline. It gets top after-dark marks. A 4.5 from 458 reviews and $50 (€45) for 90 minutes keep it fourth. The GetYourGuide copy rates 4.7 from 1,296, but that page wouldn't load for us. First Lady runs it from 112 East Wacker on the Riverwalk; up to 250 aboard, blankets for sale. Lock waits can add time.

What it is: First Lady's narrated 90-minute night cruise down the Chicago River, through the lock and out onto Lake Michigan for the skyline.

Summer only, Wednesday and Saturday nights
Cheapest boat on the list, from $25 (€22), and it exists for one thing: the Navy Pier fireworks from the water. Summer only, Wednesday and Saturday nights. A 4.4 from 824 reviews is what drags it to fifth. Wendella sells a river option of 45 to 60 minutes or a lake option of about two hours. The fireworks themselves last about 10 minutes, so pick the river boat unless you want the lake. Deck seats go first come, first served.

Wendella's 90-minute sunset run from the Wrigley Building dock on Michigan Avenue, $45 (€40). You watch the skyline turn from silhouette to lit, which is lovely, but it's a dusk trip, so it scores lower on after-dark than the full night cruise. Rated 4.5 from 1,728. Reviewers mention 5:30 and 6 p.m. departures. This is not an architecture tour, and the page lists no operating months.

A one-hour lantern walk from the Tin Man statue in Oz Park, $26 (€23). US Ghost Adventures keeps it to 15 and walks briskly past private houses in Lincoln Park, stopping outside rather than going in. A 4.4 from only 127 reviews puts it seventh. It's short, it's cheap, and the Booze and Boos walk covers the same neighborhood better. Put "Tin Man statue in Oz Park" into your map app.

A good idea with spotty availability. First Lady's 90-minute river cruise mixes gangster history and dark tales under the lit bridges. It rates 4.4 from 174, and GetYourGuide flags it as a rare find that is usually unavailable, so dates are limited. That's last place. $46 (€41). If it's running the night you want, fine. Otherwise book the regular night cruise from the same dock.

What Chicago nights are actually like
Downtown gets quiet fast. The Loop is an office district, and after dinner the streets under the L tracks can feel empty.
The life moves to the river and the lakefront in summer, and to the neighborhoods the rest of the year. Lincoln Park, where two of our ghost walks run, is a bar-and-brownstone neighborhood north of downtown, and it's busy on a Friday night.
The towers along the river are lit. So are the bridges. From the water this is the city at its best.
In summer Navy Pier adds fireworks. Its 2026 schedule ran from May 23 to September 5, on Wednesdays at 9 p.m. and Saturdays at 10 p.m., and the pier also lists a New Year's Eve show at 11:59 p.m. One oddity: the pier's listing header gives 10 p.m. for every show, so check the night you want.
Ghost pub walk, gangster tour or boat
Boat if it's warm. The First Lady night cruise out to the lake is the classic.
Ghost pub walk if you're 21 or over and it's cold. Three bars means three chances to warm up.
Gangster tour if you've got kids or a Capone fan in the group. The Loop walk is cheap and family friendly; the bus is better if walking is a problem.
Skip the lantern walk unless you're short on time. It's an hour, and the pub walk does Lincoln Park better.
The free version
Walk the Riverwalk after dark, on the south bank of the main branch, under the bridges and past the dock where the First Lady boats leave. Cross to Michigan Avenue and look back at the Wrigley Building lit up.
In summer, stand on the lakefront for the Navy Pier fireworks. The boat is nice. It isn't necessary.
You won't get the gangster stories this way. You also won't pay for them.
Getting back late on the L
Two lines run all night. The CTA's Red Line timetable calls it a 24-hour route between Howard and 95th/Dan Ryan, and the Blue Line runs at all times between O'Hare and Forest Park. Overnight owl trains on both come roughly every 15 minutes, and the Blue Line timetable shows some overnight gaps of 15 to 20 minutes.
That covers Lincoln Park (Red Line), the Loop, and O'Hare if you're flying out early. Other lines don't run through the night, so if you're staying off the Red or Blue, check your last train before booking a late tour.
The 7:30 p.m. crime bus gets back around 10 p.m. The Saturday fireworks boats run later, with the show itself at 10 p.m.
Seasons: when it gets dark and how cold it gets
Chicago winters are no joke. Night lows run around 20°F (-6°C) in January and 26°F (-3°C) in December. July and August nights sit near 67°F (19°C).
It's dark by 4:52 p.m. in December, so a winter ghost walk is fully dark from the first step. In June it isn't dark until 9:01 p.m., which is why the sunset cruise and the fireworks boats are summer things and the 7:30 p.m. crime bus starts in daylight that time of year.
None of the boat pages list operating months, and the fireworks cruise is summer only. If you're here from November to March, plan on the walks and the bus.
What's missing and what to skip
Some well-known tours didn't make it. The Chicago Hauntings ghost bus rated 3.8 and the Chicago River ghost cruise on Viator rated 4.1, both below our bar. Big Bus Chicago's sunset tour rated 4.2.
A prohibition speakeasy tour looked strong on its listing, but its page wouldn't load, so we couldn't check it. Same for a scenic sunset lake cruise. We may add them later.
Skip the Twilight Tales cruise unless it happens to be running. It usually isn't.
When it gets dark in Chicago
Times are for the 15th of each month in 2027, local time with daylight saving, computed with NOAA’s solar equations for Chicago. Dark is the end of civil twilight, when streetlights and floodlights take over; fully dark is the end of nautical twilight. Night lows are 2016–2025 averages from the Open-Meteo historical archive.
