A night walking tour is the city's greatest hits with the lights on. A guide, a group of a dozen or so, two or three hours, and a route between floodlit squares, bridges and facades. You go past things. You almost never go in.
We scored 22 of them in 13 cities. We count bikes, e-bikes, e-scooters and Segways here too, because they do the same job a bit faster. Ghost walks have their own page, which is why London and Edinburgh barely show up below: their best night walks are ghost tours.
The question with every one of these is simple. Does the dark change what you see? In Tokyo's Golden Gai, obviously yes. On a Prague Castle courtyard after the day crowds go, yes. On a walk past the Pantheon that you could do at noon with the same script? Less so, and our scores reflect it.
The twelve below are ranked by Night Score, three per city at most. How the score works.

The 12 best night walking tours, ranked
Ranked by Night Score across every city we cover, with no more than three from one place. Night Score = 30% rating, 10% review count, 20% price per hour, 40% how much the night is the point. How we score
Top of the list on reviews: 4.9 from 9,486, which maxes our proven score. Amsterdamliebe's licensed guide spends 90 minutes on the history and working rules of the Red Light District, from the National Monument on Dam Square to In de Waag on Nieuwmarkt. It was $25 (€22) today, down from $29 (€26). The dark score is only 6, because the story is the same by day. No cameras at all, not for under-14s, and 16 to 18 only with a parent. Pick an evening slot. See our Amsterdam page for the city's tour rules.

After dark: The district's red lights and canals make more sense in the evening, though the story is the same by day.

The most Rome you can see in one evening. EsBikeTours rides four hours by e-bike through Monti, the Capitoline, St. Peter's and the lit Colosseum, with dinner and wine included, and the traffic is far lighter than by day. Rated 4.9 from 1,348 reviews. At $68 (€61) it's $17 (€15.20) an hour with food, which is fair. Capped at 15, with ten riders per guide. Under-12s ride a cargo or trailer bike with a parent. Start times aren't listed on the page. It finishes back near Termini.

The one with a costume and a horn. A family-run company sends a guide dressed as the medieval night watch on his old round, 90 minutes from the Powder Tower on Namesti Republiky through the Old Town to Charles Bridge. That conceit only works after dark, hence a dark score of 7. It's 4.9 from 455 reviews and $27 (€24). The page calls it theatrical rather than graphic and welcomes families, which makes it the best kids' pick here. You finish with a group photo at the Charles IV statue.

What it is: A family-run company sends a guide in nightwatchman costume on a 90-minute walk from the Powder Tower through the Old Town to Charles Bridge.
Good to know: Meet in front of the Powder Tower at Namesti Republiky 5; finishes with a group photo at the Charles IV statue by Charles Bridge. Families are welcome: the page calls the content theatrical rather than graphic.
After dark: It retraces the medieval night watch's round, horn call included, so walking it by lantern light after dark is the whole conceit.

A 7:00 p.m. ride, so it's genuinely dark all year in Singapore. Let's Go Tour Singapore leaves its Crawford Lane shop and follows the Kallang River to the National Stadium, the Singapore Flyer, the F1 pit grandstand, Marina Bay Sands and Merlion Park. Two hours, $48 (€43), rated 4.9 from 598 reviews. Bike, helmet, poncho and a licensed guide are included; food isn't. Capped at 15, two people minimum per booking. It's flat and it's cooler than the daytime version, which in Singapore matters.

The cheapest walk in the top twelve per hour: $28 (€25) for two and a half hours, or $11 (€9.80) an hour, which maxes the value score. Carpe Diem Tours walks from Piazza Navona past the Pantheon and the Trevi Fountain, along the Imperial Forums, and ends outside the floodlit Colosseum. Outside, not in. Capped at 15. Rated 4.9 but on 409 reviews, which is what keeps it mid-table. A good first-night walk: you'll know where everything is afterwards.

A perfect 5.0, on 295 reviews. Lock Your Tour goes from the Vittoriano past the Pantheon and the Trevi Fountain to the Spanish Steps, in groups of 12 at most. It's $40 (€36) for two and a half to three hours, and no monument is entered. The catch is the small print: it's non-refundable and can't be changed once booked, which is unusual for a walk. Ages 11 and up. If your dates might move, book the Carpe Diem walk instead.

McGee's walks from Tynska street in the Old Town up to the Prague Castle complex and Golden Lane, then down through Mala Strana to Malostranska metro. The courtyards are floodlit and close to empty after the buildings shut. Exterior only. Meet at Tynska 627/7, not 627/8. Groups up to 30, and the tram ride, about $1.70 (€1.50), is on you. The joint-highest dark score on the page, an 8, because the DC memorials are lit and quiet at night and a bike gets between them in a way your legs won't. Unlimited Biking rides four to five miles from the U.S. Navy Memorial. Bike, helmet, lights, a reflective vest and snacks are included. $65 (€58) for three hours, up to 15 riders. The 4.7 rating is what holds it at eighth. Under-18s need an adult; child trailers and tandems are available. Late arrivals may not be taken.

Half day, half night, by design. Bike Around Tour Singapore starts at 5:00 p.m. by Nicoll Highway MRT, rides through Kampong Gelam, Haji Lane, Little India, Chinatown and Lau Pa Sat in daylight, and reaches Marina Bay as the skyline lights up. That daylight first half is why its dark score is 6. A 5.0 from 240 reviews, $60 (€54) for three hours, capped at 8. You need to be confident on a bike. The meeting point is taxi stand F21 at 20 Republic Avenue, not Republic Plaza.

Golden Gai, Kabukicho and the Shibuya Crossing only look like this at night, so it shares the top dark score. MagicalTrip pairs you with a photographer who walks you through them and takes your portraits against the neon. Twenty edited photos and one drink are included, but at $117 (€105) for two and a half hours the value score is the lowest here. Rated 5.0 from 205 reviews, capped at 6, all ages. Meet at the lion statue at Shinjuku east exit. The train to Shibuya is on you.

The short castle option. Your Boutique Guide meets you outside the glass exit of Malostranska metro (white umbrella), takes the tram up, tram ticket included, and spends 90 minutes in the lit, mostly empty castle courtyards with the view over the Old Town. $28 (€25), rated 4.9 but on just 149 reviews, which is why it's near the bottom. Not a monuments walk, and better for it. Adventure World Tours spends two hours on Kreuzberg's backstreets, bars and subcultures, which only really show up in the evening. What separates a good night walk from a dud
The dark has to do something. The best walks here are built around something that only exists at night: neon in Shinjuku, the Marina Bay skyline at 7 p.m., the Prague Castle courtyards after the crowds leave, the medieval night watch's round. The weaker ones are a daytime route moved to the evening. Same stops, same script.
Check the start time. Singapore's Light to Night ride starts at 5 p.m. and spends half its time in daylight. In Florence, reviewers of the night highlights walk report 5 and 6 p.m. starts. In summer, a 7 p.m. walk in Rome or Prague is a daylight walk.
Expect exteriors. Prague Castle's grounds are open from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. all year, says the castle, but the historic buildings close at 4 p.m. from November to March and 5 p.m. the rest of the year. Every castle night walk is outdoors. Every Rome walk on this list ends outside the Colosseum, not in it.
Group size. Twelve is good. Thirty is a crowd at a viewpoint.
Read the refund rules. One Rome walk here is non-refundable and can't be changed. Most aren't like that.
Amsterdam's 10 p.m. rule
This one matters for the top tour on the page. The City of Amsterdam's rules for guided tours say tours can start from 8 a.m. and must finish by 10 p.m. at the latest. Groups are capped at 15, tours may not pass prostitution windows, and nobody drinks during a tour.
So in June, when it isn't dark in Amsterdam until 10:53 p.m., no licensed walk can happen in the dark at all. The Red Light District walks are about the district, its history and how the trade is regulated, on the streets around the windows. They're excellent at that. They're best booked between October and March, when 7 p.m. is properly night.
On foot, bike, e-bike or scooter
Walk if the city is compact. Prague's Old Town, central Rome and Kreuzberg are all done well on foot, and the walks are cheapest: $26 to $40 (€23 to €36).
Ride if the sights are spread out. The DC memorials and Singapore's bayfront are long and flat, and the bike tours there cost $48 to $65 (€43 to €58). Rome's e-bike covers Monti to St. Peter's in one evening, on cobbles, in traffic.
Scooters and Segways are a middle option. Budapest's MonsteRoller e-scooter ride is 90 minutes for $57 (€51) on a sale that ends October 31, and Paris's only entry is a Segway loop to the lit Eiffel Tower for $74 (€66).
Honestly, in Florence or Venice I'd just walk on my own. Florence's centre is small, its one sightseeing night walk only just cleared our bar at 4.4, and Venice's deTourist night walk is $95 (€85) for 90 minutes.
Where night walks are best
Rome has the most: four scored, three in the top twelve. The centre is floodlit, fine to walk late, and the walks are cheap. Prague is next, with the nightwatchman walk and two castle walks. Then Singapore for night cycling, Amsterdam for the Red Light District walks, Washington, DC by bike, Tokyo for the photo walk and Berlin for Kreuzberg.
Where they're missing: London, Edinburgh and Dublin, where the night walks are ghost walks. Salem's 1692 history walk runs at 7:30 p.m. and 3 p.m. on the same route. Bangkok's two night rides are scooters and bikes from 6 p.m., both on under 100 reviews.
Kids, safety and when not to bother
Most walks have no minimum age. The exceptions: the Red Light District walk is 14 and up, Rome's Lock Your Tour walk 11 and up, the Paris Segway 12 and up, Budapest's e-scooters 14 and up with a signed waiver for under-18s. On bikes, Rome puts under-12s on a cargo or trailer bike, and DC has child trailers and tandems.
On a bike at night, take the lights and vest if they're offered (DC includes both). In Amsterdam, bikes come fast on dark streets. Prague's castle route has no public toilets. Our safety guide covers getting back.
When not to bother: in high summer in the north, and in any small city where you'd just be paying someone to walk you past things you'd find anyway. The stories are what you're paying for. If the guide's script is just names and dates, go on your own.
Every other night walking tour we scored
The rest of the 22 night walking tours we scored, best first. They cleared our bar but lost out on score, or on the three-per-city cap.
A guided walk, usually two to three hours, through a city's floodlit old town and monuments after dark. You see the sights from outside. Ghost walks are a separate kind, covered on our ghost tours page.
What is the best night walking tour?
By our Night Score, Amsterdamliebe's small-group Red Light District walk (7.8), rated 4.9 from 9,486 reviews. For a walk that really needs the dark, the Nightwatchman of Prague and the Tokyo night photo walk score higher on that factor.
Can you go inside Prague Castle at night?
Not inside the buildings. The castle grounds are open until 10 p.m. all year, but the historic buildings close at 4 p.m. from November to March and 5 p.m. from April to October. Night walks there are outdoors.
Are Red Light District tours allowed at night in Amsterdam?
Only until 10 p.m. City rules say guided tours must finish by then, groups are capped at 15, and tours may not pass prostitution windows. Licensed walks cover the district's history around those limits.
Is a night bike tour better than a walking tour?
Where the sights are spread out, yes. In Washington, DC and Singapore a bike covers the lit waterfront or Mall in two or three hours. In compact old towns like Prague, walk.
Prague Castle: opening hours– Complex open 6:00 to 22:00 all year; historic buildings 9:00 to 17:00 April to October, 9:00 to 16:00 November to March, checked October 26, 2026
