Vatican Museums at night

No night openings in 2026/27 Last entry 6 p.m., closes 8 p.m. $22 (€20) at the door

There are no night openings at the Vatican Museums this season. The museums' own hours page and their 2026 to 2027 calendar show the usual Monday to Saturday hours, 8 a.m. to 8 p.m., and nothing later. No Friday evenings. No 10:30 p.m. closings.

That's why this page has no ranked tours. We don't rank something that doesn't exist, and every "Vatican night tour" our researcher found was one of two things: a late-afternoon entry that ends by 8 p.m., or a walk around the outside of the walls.

It wasn't always like this. The museums ran Friday night openings for years, up to 2019, and in 2023 they opened on Friday and Saturday evenings until 10:30 p.m. If they come back, this page will change. For now, here's what you can actually do, and the one trick that gets you inside the Sistine Chapel after dark.

The official hours and prices

Straight from museivaticani.va:

  • Monday to Saturday: 8 a.m. to 8 p.m., last entry 6 p.m. The galleries start clearing 30 minutes before closing.
  • Last Sunday of the month: 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., last entry 12:30 p.m., free. Expect a long queue.
  • Closed: other Sundays, plus a list of feast days. For the rest of 2026 that's 1 November and 8, 25 and 26 December.
  • Tickets: $22 (€20) full and $11.20 (€10) reduced at the door. Booking on the official site adds $5.60 (€5), so $28 (€25) and $16.80 (€15).

Pay the booking fee. Turning up at 5:30 p.m. hoping to walk in is a gamble I wouldn't take.

What "Vatican night tours" actually sell

Search for a Vatican night tour and you'll get results. Read them closely.

The Tour Guy's "Vatican Evening Tour" rated 4.3 on 126 reviews when our researcher checked, below our bar. With no night openings, an evening tour can only use the late-afternoon entry window. Freetour's "Vatican Night Tour" also rated 4.3, and it doesn't go in at all. It's a walk outside.

A GetYourGuide listing called "Vatican at Night Small Group Tour" showed 4.6 from 52 reviews at $212 (€189). Its page wouldn't load for us, so we can't tell you what it includes. Given the official hours, it's very likely a late-afternoon slot. At that price, ask before you pay.

None of this is a scam, exactly. But "at night" in a product name means nothing if the building shuts at 8.

The winter trick: last entry after dark

Here's the thing the hours hide. From November to February, Rome gets dark early. In November the sun sets at 4:50 p.m. and it's dark by 5:20. In December it's dark by 5:11.

So a 6 p.m. entry in winter means you're inside the museums at night. Not a special opening, but the effect is close: the day groups are thinning, the windows are black, and you're walking toward the Sistine Chapel as the building empties. You come out into full darkness.

In summer this doesn't work. In June the sun sets at 8:46 p.m., so you leave in daylight. Book the last slot anyway for the smaller crowds, but don't expect night.

Do it on your own with an official ticket. You don't need a guide to be there late. If you want one for the Raphael Rooms and the chapel, book a daytime tour and save your evening for something else.

Seeing the Vatican after dark, outside the museums

St. Peter's Basilica keeps later hours than the museums. From 26 October 2026 to 28 March 2027 it's open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., per the basilica's site, and in summer it ran until 8. In December that's nearly two hours inside after sunset.

The dome closes earlier, at 5 p.m. in winter. On a clear December day a late climb, if they still let you up, puts you on top close to sunset, at 4:39. That might be the best view of Rome at dusk anywhere.

St. Peter's Square is lit at night and you can walk in any time. Then go east down Via della Conciliazione to Castel Sant'Angelo and the angels on the bridge. That's where Rome's best-rated ghost walk ends, and it's on our Rome night tours page.

Getting there and back

Metro line A runs to the Vatican side of the river. Last trains leave the end stations at 11:30 p.m. Sunday to Thursday and 1:30 a.m. on Friday and Saturday. A BIT ticket is $1.70 (€1.50) for 100 minutes, or tap a contactless card at the gate.

From the museums' exit, walking into the centre is easy too. Prati, the neighbourhood just north, has plenty of places for dinner after a late visit.

Frequently asked questions

Are the Vatican Museums open at night?

Not in 2026/27. The official hours are Monday to Saturday 8 a.m. to 8 p.m., last entry 6 p.m., and the season's calendar shows no evening openings.

Are the Vatican Friday night openings coming back?

Nothing has been announced. The museums ran them up to 2019 and opened late on Fridays and Saturdays in 2023. Check museivaticani.va before you travel.

What is the latest time you can enter the Vatican Museums?

6 p.m., Monday to Saturday. On the free last Sunday of the month, last entry is 12:30 p.m.

Is a Vatican night tour worth it?

Not this season. The ones sold are either late-afternoon entries you can book yourself or walks outside the walls. In winter, a 6 p.m. entry already puts you inside after dark.

Is the Sistine Chapel open in the evening?

Only as part of a normal museum visit, since the chapel sits at the end of the museum route. Enter by 6 p.m. and you can be inside until the galleries start clearing, 30 minutes before the 8 p.m. close. It's a long walk from the entrance, longer if you stop for the Raphael Rooms on the way, so don't dawdle in the first galleries.

Can you visit St. Peter's Basilica in the evening?

Yes. Until 28 March 2027 it's open until 7 p.m., which in winter is well after dark. The dome closes at 5 p.m.
