Night Tours in Boston

#1: Freedom Trail pub crawl, 7.0 Dark by 4:44 p.m. in December 10 tours ranked

Boston keeps its dead downtown. That's what makes the night tours work.

The Granary, King's Chapel and Central burying grounds sit right on the Freedom Trail, between office blocks and hotel lobbies, and after dark the slate headstones behind the iron fences do most of a ghost guide's job for free. Add a handful of taverns that claim Revolutionary regulars and a harbor that's lovely at sunset, and you have the whole night scene here.

There's no night bus worth booking. No city-lights tour, either, with enough reviews to rank.

So the ten tours below are ghost walks, pub walks and boats. A pub crawl takes first place because its rating is the best in the city, 4.9 from over a thousand reviews. The ghost trolley that everyone has heard of comes second, held back by a 4.5. And the harbor cruises bunch together in the middle because each one is really a sunset trip that ends at dark.

First, and mostly on the strength of its reviews: 4.9 from 1,053, the best score of any night tour in Boston. Boston Crawling meets you at the Sam Adams statue by Faneuil Hall and works through historic pubs nearby, with Revolutionary history between pints. It's $60 (€54) for two and a quarter hours, 21+ with ID and capped at 12. Drinks are on you. The catch: there are three daily start times and the page won't say which are in the evening. The famous one. Historic Tours of America runs a costumed conductor from Long Wharf, and the trolley stops so you can walk into the Granary and Copp's Hill burying grounds after dark. That's real access, and it scores 8 on after-dark. A 4.5 from 2,750 reviews is what keeps it second. Reviewers say there's more walking than riding. $46 (€41), tips included, up to 20 per departure. A real schooner, the Adirondack III or IV, out of Rowes Wharf behind the Boston Harbor Hotel for two hours under sail. It rates 4.8 from 315, which lifts it to third. It's also the priciest thing on the list at $82 (€73), and the name lies: champagne is not included. Drinks are sold on board, card only, and water is the one free thing. You can bring a picnic. No operating months listed, so don't count on it in January.

The best value in town, I think. $25 (€22) for 90 minutes, starting at 8 p.m. at the Central Burying Ground entrance on Boston Common, by 106 Boylston Street. It's history first, scares second, and finishes at the Omni Parker House about a mile away. A 4.5 from 197 reviews and groups of up to 35 hold it at fourth. Reviewers say the meeting point has no sign. Look for the cemetery gate, not a flag.

Two and a half hours for $36 (€32) is the best price per hour on this list, which is why it's level with the Common walk. A 4.6 from 170 keeps it fifth. 21+, max 12, tip included, drinks extra. What Boston nights are actually like

Small. Downtown Boston is a compact grid of crooked streets, and nearly every tour here starts within a 15-minute walk of Park Street station.

After the shops close, the Freedom Trail empties out. The gold dome of the State House is lit, Faneuil Hall and the Quincy Market buildings stay busy with bars, and the burying grounds go quiet behind their fences. That contrast is what the ghost guides use. Most of them tell their stories from the gate. The Ghosts and Gravestones trolley is the one product on our list that takes you inside a burying ground after dark.

The harbor is the other half. Rowes Wharf, with the big arch of the Boston Harbor Hotel, is where three of our four boats leave, and from April to October that's where the evening crowd goes.

Ghost walk, pub walk or boat

Pub walk if everyone is 21 or over. Boston's oldest taverns are the point, and both pub products are small-group. The Freedom Trail crawl has the better reviews; the Booze and Boos walk has the ghosts and the lower price.

Ghost trolley if you have kids aged 6 or over, or if you actually want to stand among the headstones at night.

Ghost walk if you're on a budget. The 8 p.m. Boston Common walk at $25 (€22) is the pick of the four.

Boat from late spring to early fall. Pay up for the schooner if you care about sailing; take the Mass Bay Lines loop if you just want the view.

Don't book two graveyard walks. They cover the same three burying grounds.

The free version: the Freedom Trail after dark

You can do a decent ghost walk without a guide. Start at Boston Common by the Central Burying Ground on Boylston Street, where the $25 (€22) tour meets. Walk up to the State House on Beacon Street, then down Tremont past the Granary and King's Chapel burying grounds. Cut over to the Old State House and finish at Faneuil Hall for a drink.

It's about a mile. You'll miss the stories, and you won't get through any locked gate. Then walk the Harborwalk to Rowes Wharf and watch the sunset boats come back in.

Honestly, if you're only curious about the Freedom Trail at night, this is enough.

Getting back late on the T

The T is not a 24-hour system. The MBTA's visitor guide says it plainly: there's no late-night or overnight train service in Boston.

Its subway guide gives typical hours of about 5 a.m. to 1 a.m. Monday to Thursday, 5 a.m. to 2 a.m. on Friday and Saturday, and 6 a.m. to 1 a.m. on Sunday. To make the last connections, be at a downtown station (Park Street, Downtown Crossing, State, Government Center, Haymarket or North Station) by 12:35 a.m. Sunday to Thursday, or 1:30 a.m. on Friday and Saturday. A ride is $2.40 (€2.10) with a CharlieCard, contactless card or cash.

That's plenty for any tour on this list. The 9 p.m. Death and Dying walk is done around 10:30 p.m., and every start point is a few minutes from one of those stations. A pub crawl that turns into a late night is another story. Plan on a cab.

Seasons: dark early, cold early

Boston nights get properly cold. Night lows average around 24°F (-5°C) in January and 27°F (-3°C) in December, and even October drops to about 49°F (9°C). July is the warm one, near 67°F (19°C).

The upside of winter: it's dark by 4:44 p.m. in December, so any evening ghost walk is fully dark. In June it doesn't get dark until 8:56 p.m., and the 8 p.m. Common walk starts in daylight.

The harbor boats list no operating months on their pages. Sailing here is a warm-season business, so check your date before you plan around a December cruise. One exception worth knowing: Classic Harbor Line's yacht page mentions December holiday sailings.

For lights, the city lights the Boston Common tree on December 3, 2026, from 6 to 8 p.m. at 139 Tremont Street, and the trees on the Commonwealth Avenue Mall at 8 p.m. the same night. October is ghost season everywhere, and the walks fill up. If you want the full Halloween treatment, it's in Salem, not here.

What's missing and what to skip

A night bus or city-lights tour. None has enough reviews to rank.

Some tours you'll see advertised didn't make it. The Boston Haunted Pub Crawl rated 3.9. The Ghosts and Gravestones Nightwalk rates 4.9 but had fewer than 50 reviews, and the crime and mobster walks we found showed no evening start times. There's also a Boos and Brews pub crawl on sale on GetYourGuide that our researcher didn't record.

Skip the lantern walk unless the timing suits you. An hour isn't long enough, and the Boston Common walk covers the same ground for less.

When it gets dark in Boston

Times are for the 15th of each month in 2027, local time with daylight saving, computed with NOAA’s solar equations for Boston. Dark is the end of civil twilight, when streetlights and floodlights take over; fully dark is the end of nautical twilight. Night lows are 2016–2025 averages from the Open-Meteo historical archive.
