Night Tours in Bangkok

#1: Expique tuk-tuk by night, 8.8 Dark by 6:10 p.m. in November 10 tours ranked

Bangkok is good at night. Better than by day, some would say, and I'd agree.

The heat lets up a little, the temples get floodlit, the Pak Khlong Talat flower market gets busy, and Yaowarat Road in Chinatown turns into a long line of food stalls that only trade after dark. The trouble is that these places are spread across the old city and both banks of the Chao Phraya, and the traffic is what it is. That's what the tuk-tuk tours solve, and it's why one of them sits at the top of this page with 4,182 reviews at 4.9 and a price of $38 (€34).

Food dominates the rest.

We ranked ten on the Night Score: three tuk-tuk evenings, three food walks, two bike rides, an e-scooter tour, a dinner cruise and a bar hop. A firefly ride on the green peninsula across the river makes the top three because it is the one thing here you can only do in the dark.

8.8/10Night Score
  • From $38 (€34)
  • 4 hours
  • Starts: Evening
  • Small group, 10+
  • 4.9 (4,182 reviews)

The strongest tour on the page by a distance. 4,182 reviews at 4.9 maxes out the review-count factor, and $38 (€34) for four hours is about $9.50 (€8.50) an hour. Expique meets at Krung Thonburi BTS exit 1 on the Green Line and runs through Thonburi's food streets, Wat Prayurawongsawat, the flower market and the floodlit old city to Chinatown, finishing around 11:00 p.m. Dinner tastings are included. It's alcohol-free, two people share each tuk-tuk, and the minimum age on the small-group option is 10.

What it is: Expique runs a small-group tuk-tuk evening from Krung Thonburi through Thonburi's food streets, Wat Prayurawongsawat, the flower market, the floodlit old city and the Giant Swing to Chinatown.

Good to know: Tuk-tuk, guide, dinner tastings with soft drinks and dessert, water and a limited-distance drop-off are included; the tour is alcohol-free. Meets at Krung Thonburi BTS exit 1 (Green Line), two people per tuk-tuk, minimum age 10 on the small-group option; the page says it is not advisable for young children.

After dark: It is built for the night: the Pak Khlong Talat flower market is busiest after dark, Wat Pho and the Grand Palace walls are floodlit, and Chinatown's street food peaks late.

The food-first version, and nearly as well proven: 4.9 from 2,925. Bangkok Food Tours meets at 7:00 p.m. at Samyan MRT exit 2 and rides to Chinatown, Banthat Thong Road and the flower market, with enough tastings for dinner and a drink at Secrets Bar. At $77 (€68) it costs twice the Expique tour, which is why it's second. Capped at 10. There's a hotel drop-off for selected hotels but no pickup, whatever the inclusions list says. Private from $92 (€82).

fireflies peak May to December

The one that scores a full 10 on after-dark, because fireflies don't exist at noon. Bamboo Bicycle Tours takes you by boat across the Chao Phraya to Bang Krachao, rides bamboo bikes at sunset, serves a Thai dinner and then puts you on a boat to watch the fireflies. $54 (€48). Only 243 reviews hold it at third. The page shows no start time, the season peaks May to December, and one reviewer warns the bikes are poorly lit once it's dark. MagicalTrip meets at Wat Mangkon MRT exit 3 and ends there, with groups capped at 8. Rated 4.9 from 625. $60 (€53) for three hours, and it scores a notch lower on after-dark than the 6:00 p.m. Chinatown walk because the page leaves the start time to the booking calendar. Meets at 6:00 p.m. at the Bangkok Centre Hotel by Hua Lamphong MRT exit 4 and ends back at the station. $55 (€49) for three hours is good value, and the 4.9 is strong, but 208 reviews is a small count for Bangkok, so it's sixth. Read the small print. It's non-refundable, there's no vegetarian or halal option, and it's no good if you can't eat seafood.

What Bangkok nights are actually like

Hot, loud and full of food.

Chinatown is the center of it. Yaowarat Road's stalls set up after dark, and six of the ten tours on this page end up there at some point. Close by, the Pak Khlong Talat flower market is at its busiest after dark. The big temples, Wat Pho, Wat Arun and the Grand Palace, are floodlit, and the night tours show you them from outside, from a tuk-tuk or from the river. None of the ranked tours includes Grand Palace entry.

Siam and Silom are the modern side: malls, rooftop bars and the Patpong night market. Thonburi, across the river, is quieter and lamp-lit, and that's where the bike tours go.

Tuk-tuk, food walk, bike or cruise

Tuk-tuk for a first night. It covers the most ground and the Expique tour is the best value on the page. Know that you'll be breathing traffic.

Food walk if you'd rather go deep on Chinatown than wide across the city. Three of the ranked tours are walks or tuk-tuk food nights centered on Yaowarat.

Bike or e-scooter if you want the back lanes of Thonburi and you're comfortable in traffic.

Firefly ride if you want something other people's Bangkok trips didn't have. It needs the right season.

Dinner cruise if you want to sit down. Only Sawasdee made the list.

The free version: Chinatown on your own

You don't need a guide to eat on Yaowarat Road. Take the MRT Blue Line to Wat Mangkon, come up into Chinatown and walk. The food costs money, obviously, but the walk is free, and you choose the stalls.

What you lose is the ordering. The guides know which stall does what, and the tours bundle a set dinner's worth of tastings into one price. If you're happy pointing at things, go alone. If you'd like someone to explain what's in the pot, the $55 (€49) Chinatown walk is fair money.

The flower market is a short walk west of Chinatown along the river, and it's free to wander.

Getting back late

The BTS Skytrain gives its service hours as 5:00 a.m. to 1:00 a.m. Its timetable page says the last train from Siam to all stations leaves at 12:02 a.m., and the last ones to the line ends at 12:15 a.m. The MRT Blue Line, run by BEM, lists 6:00 a.m. to midnight every day.

So the 11:00 p.m. finish of the top-ranked tour still leaves you time for a train, and Expique includes a limited-distance drop-off anyway. Bangkok Food Tours drops off at selected hotels. WanderSiam ends on Yaowarat Road and says your taxi home is not included.

Chao Phraya Express Boat lists its lines and fares online but not evening times, so check the routes page before you plan a river trip back.

Seasons: dark early, rain in the middle of the year

It's dark by 6:10 p.m. in November and by 7:12 p.m. in July, so a 6:00 p.m. start is nearly dark in the cool months and plain daylight in midsummer.

Night lows never drop far. Our weather data puts them at about 72°F (22°C) in December and January and 80°F (27°C) in April and May.

Rain is the real variable. The dataset counts rain on about 27 days in an average September and under 4 in December. The firefly season, by the operator's account, peaks from May to December, so September means fireflies and wet bikes.

New Year's Eve moves the Sawasdee cruise to Terminal 21 Rama 3 Pier.

What to skip

Most of the Chao Phraya dinner cruises. Our researcher checked eight and only one cleared our bar. Opulence rated 4.1, River Star Princess and Wonderful Pearl 4.2, White Orchid 3.6, Meridian 3.7 and Royal Princess 3.2. That's a lot of buffet boats with a lot of unhappy reviews.

A cruise GetYourGuide lists at 4.8 from 4,986 reviews might deserve a place, but its page wouldn't load for us, so it isn't ranked.

We also left out a well-rated chef-led backstreets food tour because its page showed no evening times. Five stars from 2,335 reviews, and maybe the best food tour in town. We just couldn't confirm when it runs.
