Savannah is built on a grid of squares, and at night each one is a little dark room with a fountain or a statue in the middle and live oaks overhead. Ghost guides use them like stops on a subway line. Chippewa, Madison, Lafayette, Oglethorpe: you'll hear those names on every tour.
The ranked list below is nearly all walks. Two are haunted pub crawls, which make more sense here than in most cities because the historic district lets you carry a drink between bars in a plastic cup. One is an indoor paranormal investigation. No bus or trolley made it.
The top two tie on Night Score. A candlelit walk wins on rating and review count; a 9 p.m. ghost hunt with EMF meters matches it on price and darkness. Honestly, either one is a good night out. The Candlelit walk is for anyone. Ghostwalker is for adults who want to hold the gear.

Ties for first on Night Score, and it gets there a different way: a 9 p.m. start, K2 EMF meters, two hours, and $35 (€31), cheaper per hour than the walk it ties with. It meets at the southwest corner of Madison Square. Sixteen and up, no exceptions, and the cap is 16 people. That small group is a big part of why reviewers like it. Tips aren't included, and nor is entry to any house, cemetery or museum; you're outside the whole time. No alcohol, no animals. 733 reviews at 4.9.

The best value ghost walk in Savannah. $20 (€17.90) for 90 minutes, rated 4.9, which is why it scores 9.6 on price and ranks fourth with fewer reviews (620) than the tours above. If weather cancels it you get a new date or a full refund. It's a strong tour that lands sixth only because the five above are rated a touch higher or cost less per hour.

Two hours from Clary's Cafe at Abercorn and Jones Streets, with a family version and an adults-only 16-plus version. That choice is the reason to book it. What you're actually buying is unclear: Viator calls it private, meaning only your party, but prices it per person, and GetYourGuide calls the same tour small-group. Ask before you pay $36 (€32) a head. A 4.7 rating on 1,220 reviews puts it seventh.

Four pubs with haunted reputations, ending at Colonial Park Cemetery or Chippewa Square. Spooky Savannah starts at 307 E President Street, the 17Hundred90 inn; one reviewer mentions a 7:30 p.m. start. It's 21 and up, up to 30 people, $35 (€31) for 1 hour 45 minutes. The bar stops are short, five to ten minutes each, so this is more walk than crawl. The page says drinks are included without saying how many. A 4.7 rating holds it at eighth. The host says Halloween is its busiest night of the year.

An 8 p.m. loop that starts and ends at the Lafayette Square fountain, run by the same company as the 10 p.m. adults walk at number five. This is the family version: kid rates, up to 30. It's $30 (€27) for 90 minutes, with gratuities and parking fees listed as included. Fine, solid, unremarkable: a 4.7 on 507 reviews ranks it ninth. The only Savannah tour that takes you indoors at night: 90 minutes investigating the rooms of a reputedly haunted former speakeasy and pharmacy at 416 W Liberty Street, with equipment. That earns the top after-dark score in the city. The price sinks it. At $86 (€76) it costs more than twice any walk here, and its value score is 3.9. Historic Tours of America runs it. Ages 13 and up, and the page calls it unsuitable for children. Max 16, steep stairs, no wheelchair access.

What a night in Savannah is like
Two zones. River Street and Bay Street are the loud part, with bars and the waterfront. The squares, a few blocks south, go quiet fast once the shops close, and that's where every ghost tour on this list spends its time.
The cemeteries close before the tours start. The city's rules for Colonial Park, on Abercorn Street, give it hours of 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. from November through March and 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. from March through November, and say there's no trespassing after hours. So the walks that "end at Colonial Park" end at the gates. Bonaventure and Laurel Grove close at 5 p.m. every day.
In October, Colonial Park stays open to 8 p.m. while it's dark by about 7:17 p.m. That leaves a short window to walk in at dusk on your own before a later tour.
How to pick: walk, hunt or crawl
Start with a walk. The Candlelit walk and Savannah Supernatural are the two I'd send most people to, one for the rating, one for the price.
Want something with an edge? Ghostwalker at 9 p.m. or Spirits and Scoundrels at 10 p.m. Both are adults-only in practice (16 and up for Ghostwalker, 18 for Scoundrels), both start after the family tours are done.
Crawls work here. With a to-go cup you're not stuck inside a bar, and Booze and Boos is rated as high as the best walks. Spooky Savannah's stops are short, so pick it if you want the walk more than the bars.
Indoors costs more. The Ghost Hunters investigation is the only one, at more than double a walk's price.
To-go cups: the drinking rules
Savannah's to-go cup ordinance lets bars sell a drink to carry out in the historic district, with conditions. The cup has to be paper or plastic and can't be more than 16 fluid ounces. No cans, no bottles, no glass. A bar can hand over only one alcoholic drink per person at a time.
That's what makes the crawls work. It doesn't mean every tour wants your drink: Ghostwalker bans alcohol outright.
The free version: walk the squares
Savannah is the easiest city on our list to ghost-walk yourself. Start at Chippewa Square, walk to Madison Square, then on to Lafayette Square and its fountain. The Sorrel-Weed House is close by at 6 W Harris Street, and it's where the late tours finish. Swing east to the Colonial Park gates on Abercorn Street and back up to Bay Street.
Lit, flat, short. Our night tour safety guide has the usual sense for walking at night. The paid tours add the stories and the names; the free version adds nothing but the oaks. Which, to be fair, are most of it.
Getting back late
Mostly, you walk. Nearly every tour here starts and ends inside the historic district.
The free DOT downtown shuttles won't help after a ghost tour. The transit agency's site lists weekday service from 7:30 a.m. to 7 p.m. and weekend service from 10 a.m. to 6:30 p.m., so they stop before most tours begin. The Savannah Belles Ferry across the river runs from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m., which helps only if you're staying across the river and pick an early tour.
After the 10 p.m. walk, plan on a taxi or rideshare if your hotel is outside the squares.
Seasons: dark times, heat and Halloween
Winter is mild and early. It's dark by 5:48 p.m. in December and January nights sit around 43°F (6°C). A 7 p.m. walk is fully dark, and there's no sweating.
Summer is the slog. Dark doesn't come until about 8:59 p.m. in June, nights stay around 75°F (24°C) in July, and August sees about 23 days with some rain. The 9 and 10 p.m. tours are the ones that are actually after dark.
October is the sweet spot: dark by 7:17, nights near 62°F (17°C). Halloween is the busiest night of the year for at least one crawl operator, and bars are packed. Book ahead for the 31st.
What to skip
The Ghosts and Gravestones trolley. It has 3,424 reviews but a 4.1 rating, so it didn't make the list. The 90-minute riverboat cruise rates 3.9. Neither is worth an evening when the walks rate 4.9.
The Dead of Night adults-only walk is fine but scored 5.0 and missed the cut. And the after-dark haunted donut tour sounds great, but it had only 27 reviews when we checked.

Can you go into Colonial Park Cemetery at night?
No. The city lists hours of 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. from March through November and 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. from November through March, with no trespassing after hours. Tours tell its stories at the gates.
Can you drink on the street in Savannah?
In the historic district, yes, within the to-go cup ordinance: one drink per person, in a paper or plastic cup no bigger than 16 ounces, no glass or cans. That's why the haunted pub crawls work here.
Are Savannah ghost tours too scary for kids?
The family ones aren't. Reviewers say Savannah Supernatural isn't too scary for children around 8 to 10, and the Candlelit walk and the 8 p.m. Haunted Savannah tour both have kid rates. Skip the 9 and 10 p.m. tours, which are 16 and 18 and up.
