Amsterdam at night is a boat.
Six of the ten tours on this page are canal cruises, and two more are the city's winter Light Festival seen from the water. That's not us being lazy. It's what the city has. There's no ghost walk here with enough reviews to rank, no night wildlife, and the night food scene doesn't run as a tour.
The top spot goes to a walk, though: a small-group Red Light District tour with 9,486 reviews and a 4.9 rating. It's excellent. It's also not much of a night tour, because the city's own rules for guided tours ban groups from passing the windows and require tours to finish by 10 p.m. You get the history and the working rules of the district, not a stroll past the red lights.
So the honest advice is short. Take a canal cruise around sunset. If you're here between late November and mid-January, take the Light Festival cruise instead.

The 10 best night tours in Amsterdam, ranked
Every tour we scored in Amsterdam that cleared our bar (rated 4.4 or more from 50+ reviews), in Night Score order. Night Score = 30% rating, 10% review count, 20% price per hour, 40% how much the night is the point. How we score
Ranked first on reviews alone: 4.9 from 9,486, the highest-rated big tour in this city. Amsterdamliebe's licensed guides spend 90 minutes on the history and working rules of the Red Light District, from the National Monument on Dam Square to In de Waag on Nieuwmarkt. It's $25 (€22) today, down from $29 (€26). The catch for this site: the story is the same by day, so its after-dark score is modest. Cameras aren't allowed at all. The page says not for under-14s, and 16 to 18 only with a parent.

Amsterdam Light Festival only: 26 November 2026 to 17 January 2027
Only runs during the Amsterdam Light Festival, 26 November 2026 to 17 January 2027, and it's the most night-only thing in the city: the artworks exist after dark, and most are placed to be seen from the water. Same company and electric boats as the sunset cruise, 60 to 75 minutes from Centraal. Its 4.6 rating from 2,014 reviews is what holds it third. $27 (€24) today, down from $33 (€29), with snacks and unlimited drinks only on that option. Up to 28 passengers.

The one where everything is included. Captain Jack's small open electric boat leaves from the Museumbrug in front of the Rijksmuseum for 90 minutes at sunset and into dusk, with beer, wine, soft drinks and Dutch snacks in the price. Rated 4.8 from 813 reviews. At $46 (€41) it's more than double the basic cruises, which is why it's fourth, but once you've added drinks to those the gap shrinks. Up to 25 guests. Trigger Tours sells this one as a night tour, two hours through the Red Light District, Zeedijk, Chinatown and Nieuwmarkt with the neon as backdrop. Rated 4.7 from 430 reviews, and at $26 (€23), down from $29 (€26), it's good value. It ranks fifth on its smaller review count. There are two starting points depending on the option you choose, so check. No minimum age is stated, but the subject is adult. Under the city's rules a guided tour has to finish by 10 p.m., so 'night' means early evening in summer.

The most-reviewed tour in Amsterdam, 23,348 of them, and the lowest rating on this page at 4.4, which is why it's eighth. Three to four hours, five bars in and around the Red Light District, a shot at each, then club entry. At $15 (€13.40) today, down from $20 (€17.90), it's the cheapest night out in the city on our list. The 4.4 rating from 607 reviews is why it's ninth. Only the shots and the club entry are included; other drinks aren't, whatever the 'food and extra drinks' line suggests. Dutch law only serves alcohol at 18 and over, so bring ID.

A three-course dinner on the water for 2 hours 15 minutes, with a welcome Prosecco and table bites, from Zwanenburgwal near Nieuwmarkt. Rederij Aemstelland's cruise is rated 4.7 from 301 reviews. It's last because of price: $135 (€121) today, down from $149 (€133), and other drinks are bought on board. Fine for an anniversary. What an Amsterdam night is actually like
The canal ring is the show. Bridges are outlined in small lights, the gabled houses have their windows lit, and the water doubles all of it. You can see this from any bridge in the Grachtengordel, and from a boat you see it at eye level.
The Red Light District, De Wallen, is a few streets of the oldest part of town between Centraal and Nieuwmarkt. At night it's crowded. Most of what goes on there is people walking past windows, which is exactly what guided groups are not allowed to do.
Then there's the Light Festival. From 26 November 2026 to 17 January 2027, artworks go up along the canals and in the city centre, and they're switched on every day from 4:30 p.m. until 11 p.m. On 31 December they go off at 9 p.m.
Red Light District tours: what the city allows
Amsterdam regulates guided tours in the city centre, and the rules shape what these walks can be. Per the city's flyer for tour guides:
Tours may not pass prostitution windows. The Wallen is marked as a prohibition area.
Groups are capped at 15 participants, and guides need an exemption for groups of 5 to 15.
Tours can start from 8 a.m. and must finish by 10 p.m.
No alcohol or drugs during a tour, no loudspeakers, and guides wear a badge with their name and employer.
So a licensed Red Light District tour today is a walk about the district, its history and how the trade is regulated, mostly on the streets around it. That's what Amsterdamliebe sells, and it's why the reviews are so good: people come out understanding the place.
Two more rules, both obvious: don't photograph sex workers, and on the Amsterdamliebe walk, no cameras at all.
Which cruise, and when
Most of the canal cruises do the same loop, so pick on the boat, not the route.
Small, open, at sunset: Eco Boats (one hour) or Captain Jack (90 minutes, drinks included).
Cheapest: Flagship's evening cruise at $18.85 (€16.80).
Raining: Blue Boat's covered panoramic boat.
Dinner: Rederij Aemstelland, if you want a meal more than a view.
Time it. A cruise at sunset that ends at dusk is the best hour on the water. Too early in summer and it's a daytime cruise. In June sunset is around 10 p.m., so a 9 p.m. boat is the one.
Between 26 November and 17 January, skip the ordinary cruises and book a Light Festival boat. They're about the same price and the evening has a point. The Eco Boats one rates higher; the Starboard one includes blankets and the festival fee.
Walk the Herengracht or the Keizersgracht after dark, in either direction, and cross every bridge you come to. That's the cruise, slower, from above. Detour along Reguliersgracht, where you can look down a line of bridges one behind the other.
During the Light Festival, the artworks are out in public space along the canals, and many can be seen from the street. The festival's own walking route is 4.5 km, done whole or in sections, and you follow it with the festival app, which goes live in mid-November.
One warning. Bikes. Amsterdam's cycle lanes stay busy after dark, and a bike comes faster than you expect. Look both ways twice.
Getting back late
GVB, the city's transport company, runs night buses after the trams and metro stop. We couldn't load GVB's own night bus pages today, so we're not quoting routes or times here; check the GVB app or 9292 before you go out.
What we could confirm: the ferry from behind Centraal to Buiksloterweg in Noord runs throughout the night. And you can pay for GVB trams, buses and metro by tapping in and out with a contactless bank card or phone (OVpay), capped at $11.80 (€10.50) a day.
The old centre is small. From most cruise docks and both Red Light District walks, your hotel is probably a walk away, and that's often the best way back anyway.
When to go: darkness, cold and the Light Festival
It's dark by 5:08 p.m. in December, so every cruise on this page is a night cruise. In June it isn't dark until 10:53 p.m., and the evening cruises are sunset cruises at best.
The Light Festival months are the best time for night tours here, and also the coldest. January nights drop to about 36°F (2°C), and on an open boat on the water it feels colder. Summer nights are mild, with lows near 58°F (14°C) in August.
Autumn is the wet season in our weather data: about 15 rainy days in October and in November. That's the argument for the covered boat.
New Year's Eve: the Light Festival switches off at 9 p.m.

Where Amsterdam ranks
The best place a Amsterdam tour reaches on each of our other pages.
Can you still do a Red Light District tour in Amsterdam?
Yes, but not the old kind. The city bans guided tours from passing prostitution windows, caps groups at 15 and requires tours to end by 10 p.m. Licensed tours now cover the district's history and rules. The best-rated one we found, Amsterdamliebe's small-group walk, scores 4.9 from 9,486 reviews.
When is the Amsterdam Light Festival 2026?
Edition 15 runs from 26 November 2026 to 17 January 2027. The artworks are lit every day from 4:30 p.m. to 11 p.m., except 31 December, when they go off at 9 p.m.
What is the best evening canal cruise in Amsterdam?
By our Night Score, Eco Boats' one-hour evening sunset cruise from Centraal (7.1), rated 4.8. If you want drinks and snacks included, Captain Jack's 90-minute small-boat cruise from the Rijksmuseum is the upgrade.
Are there ghost tours in Amsterdam?
A few, but none cleared our bar. The best-rated one we found had only 67 reviews and no evening framing, and the rest had under 50 reviews. If ghosts are the point, Edinburgh and London are better bets; see the best ghost tours in Europe.
Is a night canal cruise in Amsterdam good for kids?
Yes. The canal cruises on this page have no minimum age. The Red Light District walks and the pub crawl aren't for children, and the Amsterdamliebe walk turns away under-14s.
