The best night tours in Europe

#1: Jack the Ripper walk, 8.1 15 tours in 10 cities 6 of the top 10 are ghost walks

Europe's best night tours are mostly in places where it rains a lot.

London takes the top spot and the third, Edinburgh the second and fifth, and six of the top ten are ghost walks. That isn't us being gloomy. Northern European cities have a deep bench of cheap, well-reviewed evening walks, and our Night Score likes cheap, well-reviewed and dark. The south does dinner and boats, which travelers rate highly but which don't need the night the way a vault does.

The list draws on 127 tours in the 14 European cities we cover. Ten cities make it. The four that don't include Paris, which surprises people, and I'll explain that further down.

One thing first. Several prices here were sale prices on the day we checked, October 26, 2026. Budapest and Amsterdam operators discount nearly everything. Look again before you book.

Jack the Ripper Evening Walking Tour

Ghost tours · London

8.1/10Night Score
  • From $20 (€17.90) sale
  • 2 hours
  • Starts: Evening departures
  • Large group
  • 4.9 (1,544 reviews)

Number one in Europe comes down to a struck-through price. At $20 (€17.90), down from $27 (€24), Meet the Street's Ripper walk is cheaper than nearly any guided evening in London, and its 4.9 holds across 1,544 reviews. It meets at Aldgate Underground station and spends two hours in Whitechapel and Spitalfields. This is the GetYourGuide listing. The same company's 90-minute version on Viator costs $34 (€30), so it matters where you book.

Good to know: Shown today at $20, struck through from $27. Guide and tips are included; moderate walking. The same operator sells a 90-minute version on Viator (4.9, 403 reviews, $34) that we did not record.

After dark: Sold and run as an evening walk, so the murder sites are seen under streetlight as the case files describe them.

Six people at most, and keys nobody else has. City of the Dead's Double Dead goes down into the South Bridge vaults, then into the locked Covenanter's Prison in Greyfriars Kirkyard. That access is why it beats every other Edinburgh walk on after dark. At $35 (€31) it isn't the cheapest, and the operator's own site sells it for $29 (€26; £22). It starts at the tree beside St Giles' on the Royal Mile. Twelve and up only.

What it is: A 1 hour 45 minute City of the Dead Tours walk into the South Bridge vaults and the locked Covenanter's Prison in Greyfriars Kirkyard.

Good to know: Small groups (the page states a maximum of 6); minimum age 12. Leaves from the tree beside St Giles' Cathedral and ends at Greyfriars Bobby's Bar. The operator sells a separate daytime vaults tour, so this is its evening product.

After dark: Combines the South Bridge vaults with the locked Covenanter's Prison in Greyfriars, a section only City of the Dead tours enter.

South of the river, and a different London night. The walk starts and ends at the George Inn on Borough High Street, threads past Borough Market and Southwark Cathedral, and closes with an acted-out murder inside the inn. It's interactive, so expect to be roped in. 4.9 from 932 reviews, $27 (€24). The page gives the length as two to three hours, which is vague but generous. Groups can reach 35. Not meant for anyone 12 or under.

Amsterdam's rules shape this one. The city bans guided groups from passing the windows and caps tours at 15, so what you get is a licensed guide explaining how the district works, not a gawk. Amsterdamliebe goes further and bans cameras. Nearly 9,500 reviews at 4.9 make it the most proven walk on the page. $25 (€22) on sale for 90 minutes, Dam Square to Nieuwmarkt. The big-group Edinburgh option, and a good one. How the Europe list works

Same Night Score as everywhere else on the site: traveler rating, review count, price per hour and our after-dark score, weighted 30, 10, 20 and 40. This list takes the top 15 tours in our 14 European cities, two per city at most. The method is spelled out on how we score night tours.

It only covers our cities. That leaves out the Teide and Gran Canaria stargazing tours, which outscore everything here and sit on the world list, and the Alhambra night visits in Granada, which have their own page.

The north does ghosts, the south does dinner

Look at what each half of the continent puts forward. London, Edinburgh, Dublin and Prague send walks: vaults, murders, a night watchman. Rome, Florence and Lisbon send e-bikes, sailboats and aperitivo crawls. Budapest sends boats and bars.

The ghost walks win because they're cheap and they need the dark more. A Ripper walk at $20 (€17.90) scores a 10 on value; the Florence food walk at $125 (€111) scores 5.7. And our after-dark score gives most food tours a 6, because the pasta tastes the same at 1 p.m.

So if you're in the south and want a night that couldn't happen by day, the list won't hand it to you. Rome's back lanes after dark come close. Otherwise I'd go for the river in Budapest, at night, with a drink.

Runners-up the two-per-city rule cut

Five tours scored high enough to make the page and lost their place to the cap:

  • Meet the Street's Ghastly Ghosts walk in London, 7.7: Tower Hill to St Paul's at 8 p.m.
  • Duna Cruises' paddle-steamer hour on the Danube, 7.4, for $12 (€10.70).
  • Eating Europe's Twilight Trastevere dinner walk in Rome, 7.4, $119 (€106).
  • See Your City's Original Jack the Ripper walk, 7.3, on 8,940 reviews.
  • Mercat's evening vaults tour with whisky in Edinburgh, 7.3, the only way into the Blair Street vaults.

Past them, a knot of tours tied on 7.2 with the Florence food walk: the Dark Side of Florence, Prague's underground dungeon tour and a Barcelona ghost walk. Ties break on review count, which is how Florence held 15th. All of them rank on their city pages.

Paris, Vienna, Venice and Berlin: what went wrong

Paris has a best score of 5.3, a Segway ride from the Champ de Mars. The night sightseeing cruises on the Seine we found rate 4.2 or lower, the Paris ghost walk rates 4.3, and two promising tours had no price on their pages. The city at night is still worth it; the bookable tours just aren't. Our Paris page has the free version.

Venice tops out at 6.7 with a sunset cicchetti walk. Its two ghost walks rate 3.8 and 3.9. Berlin also peaks at 6.7, with a pub crawl, and its best free view after dark is the Reichstag dome, booked through the Bundestag, not a tour site. Vienna has four products in our data; the best, an English ghost walk, scores 6.2. Its evenings belong to concerts and the opera, which the Vienna page covers.

And Rome's famous after-hours tickets are off: the Vatican Museums list no evening openings for 2026/27, and the official Colosseum night series ended on October 22.

Getting back after the tour

Night transport decides whether a late tour is easy or a slog. London's Night Tube runs only on Friday and Saturday nights, from about midnight to 5:30 a.m., on five lines. Rome's metro stops at 11:30 p.m. Sunday to Thursday and 1:30 a.m. on Friday and Saturday, so a weeknight ghost walk can leave you on a bus. Lisbon's metro closes at 1 a.m. every day. Budapest is the easy one: its night network runs all night and tram 6 never stops. Prague runs night trams from about midnight to 5 a.m. Edinburgh has 18 NightBus routes between midnight and 4:30 a.m.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best night tour in Europe?

On our Night Score, Meet the Street's Jack the Ripper evening walk in London: 8.1, rated 4.9 from 1,544 reviews, $20 (€17.90) on the day we checked. City of the Dead's Double Dead in Edinburgh is a tenth of a point behind.

Which European city is best for night tours?

London and Edinburgh. Each fills its two spots, and each had another tour good enough to make the list if the cap allowed it. Budapest, Rome and Lisbon also fill two each. Paris, surprisingly, has nothing that clears our bar for this list.

Are pub crawls in Europe worth it?

As a cheap way to meet people, yes. Budapest's ruin-bar crawl was $4.49 (€4) on sale and Lisbon's $22 (€19.70). Read what the price includes: Budapest gives you shots and club entry, not drinks, and every crawl here is 18 and up with ID.

Will the Budapest Parliament be lit up on my cruise?

Probably, but nobody promises it. The prosecco cruise operator says the lighting of Parliament and the bridges is set by city and national energy policy and can't be guaranteed on a specific date. Pick an evening departure, not a daytime one.

Which European night tours work in winter?

The walks. Ghost tours in London, Edinburgh, Dublin and Prague run all year, and the long dark suits them. Sunset sails are the ones to watch: in Lisbon sunset falls around 5:15 p.m. in December, so they leave in the late afternoon.
