Tokyo's night tours are dinner with a guide. Mostly.
Seven of the ten tours on this page are bar hops or food crawls, and four of those are in Shinjuku, where Omoide Yokocho's smoky lanes, the Kabukicho neon and the tiny bars of Golden Gai are a few minutes' walk apart. That's not a weakness. Golden Gai is mostly shut by day, its bars are tiny, and walking in cold as a foreigner who doesn't read the menu is a hard way to spend an evening. A guide fixes that.
The other three are odder, and I like them more for it: a drive to the Daikoku car meet, a photographer walking you through the neon, and a houseboat on Tokyo Bay.
What you won't find is a ghost tour, a night bus or a night bike tour with enough reviews to rank. We looked.

A perfect 5.0 from 3,633 reviews, the best rating on the page. Ninja Food Tours does 14+ tastings and three drinks at three or four izakaya through Nishi-Shinjuku, Kabukicho, Golden Gai and Omoide Yokocho for $91 (€81). It's first even though there's a lunch departure too, which costs it on after-dark. Reviewers describe a 5:00 p.m. start. Book that one. Meets at Kirin City Shinjuku Higashi, capped at 10. Look closely at the price. The $39 (€35) is the guide fee only. The page says to bring about $38 (€34; ¥6,000) in cash for food and drink, split at each of the three stops, so the real cost is closer to the Shinjuku tours than it looks. That headline price is why value maxes out and it ranks third. MagicalTrip runs it through Udagawacho and Center-gai to a hidden bar near the Scramble Crossing. 4.9 from 1,097, capped at 8. Some venues allow smoking, and there's no vegetarian option.

What it is: MagicalTrip leads a three-stop izakaya and sake bar hop through Udagawacho and Center-gai, ending near the Shibuya Scramble Crossing at a hidden bar.
Good to know: The fee covers the guide and photos only: plan on about 6,000 yen in cash for food and drinks, split at each venue (a 5-course meal and drink, shared dishes with 2 drinks, then sake). Meets at FamilyMart Shibuya Orchard Road, capped at 8; no vegetarian or vegan option and some venues allow smoking.
After dark: Shibuya's izakaya alleys and the lit Scramble Crossing are at their busiest after dark, but the core is a guided bar hop.

The big catch: Daikoku PA is closed Friday and Saturday from 7:30 p.m. to 2:00 a.m., police can close it any night, and the tour goes elsewhere then.

At $141 (€126) for 3.5 hours, about $40 (€36) an hour, value drags it to sixth. Whether that's expensive depends on what you'd pay for sushi and A5 wagyu alone, honestly. The cheap party. $25 (€22) for five hours maxes the value factor, and you get a welcome shot at each bar, hosted bottle shots, drink discounts and entry to a club. But a 4.7 from 686 and a group of up to 150 people put it ninth. It's a pub crawl, not a look at Tokyo. Arrive at Bar Propaganda (2F) near Roppongi Station by 7:30 p.m.; the group leaves the first bar around 8:15 p.m. Twenty and over, with photo ID. Other drinks are on you.

What Tokyo nights are actually like
Bright, busy and very close together, at least in Shinjuku.
Shinjuku Station has the night on both sides of it: Omoide Yokocho's yakitori lanes by the tracks on the west side, the Kabukicho neon across on the east, and Golden Gai's tiny bars just past that. Shibuya is the other big one, with the Scramble Crossing and the izakaya alleys of Udagawacho. Ueno and Okachimachi are older and cheaper, with standing bars by the Ameyoko lanes. Roppongi is clubs.
Most of this doesn't need a ticket to look at. The bars and izakaya do need a bit of nerve to walk into, and that's what the guides sell.
Out of town, the Daikoku Parking Area on the Yokohama side of the bay turns into a car meet at night, when it isn't closed.
Bar hop, food tour, car meet or cruise
Bar hop if everyone is 20 or older. The Shinjuku one ranks second on the page. The Shibuya one is cheaper on paper but you pay at each bar.
Food tour if anyone is under 20, or if you'd rather eat than drink. Two of the three Shinjuku food tours also run at lunch, so check the time you're booking.
Daikoku if you care about cars at all. Not on a Friday or Saturday if Daikoku itself is the point.
Photo walk if you're traveling alone and want pictures of yourself that aren't selfies.
Yakatabune if you want to sit down and see the bay. Expect floor seating.
The free version: a night view and a walk
The Tokyo Metropolitan Government Building in Nishi-Shinjuku has a free observation deck. Its own guide says the South deck takes visitors from 9:30 a.m. to 9:30 p.m., and the North deck closes earlier on most days. The South deck shuts on the first and third Tuesday of each month, and both are closed December 29 to 31 and January 2 and 3. It's the free version of every paid night view in the city.
Then walk east toward the station to Omoide Yokocho, cross under the tracks into Kabukicho, and keep going to Golden Gai. Looking costs nothing. Drinking is where it gets complicated, and that's when a guide helps.
The Shibuya Scramble Crossing is free too, and it's better after dark.
Getting back late: the last train is the real deadline
Tokyo's trains don't run all night. GO TOKYO, the city's official tourism site, says trains run generally from 5:00 a.m. to midnight and that your last train home will probably leave between 11:30 p.m. and 12:30 a.m. First trains start around 5:00 a.m. Tokyo Metro fares run $1.10 to $2.10 (€1 to €1.90; ¥180 to ¥330) by distance.
This matters most for one tour: the Roppongi pub crawl lasts five hours from a 7:30 p.m. meet. Do the math. You're either leaving early or getting a taxi.
Taxis, the same site says, mostly start at $3.20 (€2.80; ¥500). Look for the 空車 sign in the windshield, which means it's free.
Seasons: dark before five in winter
The swing is big. It's dark by 4:57 p.m. in December and not until 7:28 p.m. in June. So a 5:00 p.m. food tour is a night tour from November to January and a daylight one in summer.
Winter nights get cold. Our weather data puts January lows around 32°F (0°C), and February barely warmer. August nights stay near 76°F (24°C), and they're humid. June and July have the most rainy days in the dataset, about 15 or 16 each.
The yakatabune and the Daikoku drive are the two tours here where weather really changes the evening. The bar hops are indoors.
What to skip
Tours sold as night tours that start in the afternoon. Arigato's Best of Shibuya Food Tour starts at 4:00 p.m. and costs $217 (€194). We left it out.
Most private night drives, which have only a few reviews each. The Kabukicho walking tours too, with 5 to 8 reviews. Tokyo After 5, an evening food and culture tour, came in just below the ten on the Night Score.
And don't hunt for a ghost walk. None qualified.

Ninja Food Tours' Shinjuku izakaya tour ranks first: 14+ tastings and three drinks at three or four izakaya from Nishi-Shinjuku to Omoide Yokocho, $91 (€81), rated 5.0 from 3,633 reviews. Book the evening slot. MagicalTrip's Golden Gai bar hop is second.
What time is the last train in Tokyo?
Usually between 11:30 p.m. and 12:30 a.m., according to the GO TOKYO official tourism site, which says trains generally run from 5:00 a.m. to midnight. Check your own line before you head out.
Can under-20s go on Tokyo bar tours?
Not the Shinjuku bar hop or the Roppongi pub crawl: both are 20 and over, Japan's drinking age. The izakaya food tours and the photography walk are the better picks for younger travelers.
Is the Daikoku car meet on every night?
No. The tour operator says Daikoku PA is closed Friday and Saturday from 7:30 p.m. to 2:00 a.m., and police can close it on other nights. The tour visits other spots when that happens.
Where can I see Tokyo at night for free?
The South observation deck of the Tokyo Metropolitan Government Building in Shinjuku is free and takes visitors until 9:30 p.m. It closes on the first and third Tuesday of each month.
