Prague does ghost walks better than almost anything else after dark. Five of the ten tours on this page are ghost tours, and they're cheap: none costs more than $31 (€28).
The Old Town is the reason. Around Old Town Square, Týnská street and the Charles Bridge end of the district, the lanes are crooked and short, and once the day crowds go home a guide with a lantern doesn't have to work very hard. Most of these walks run about 90 minutes. Most of them never leave a half-mile patch of the Old Town.
The castle is the other half of the night. It's floodlit, it sits above everything, and the buildings are shut. Two of the tours here take you up for the views and the empty courtyards. You can also do that yourself, for the price of a tram ticket.
What's missing? A good pub crawl. Every crawl we looked at rated below our 4.4 bar.

The 10 best night tours in Prague, ranked
Every tour we scored in Prague that cleared our bar (rated 4.4 or more from 50+ reviews), in Night Score order. Night Score = 30% rating, 10% review count, 20% price per hour, 40% how much the night is the point. How we score
A guide in nightwatchman costume walks the medieval watch's round, horn call included, from the Powder Tower at Náměstí Republiky through the Old Town to Charles Bridge. That's the whole idea, and it only works in the dark, which is why its after-dark score is high. Add a 4.9 rating and $27 (€24) for 90 minutes and it comes out on top. The catch is a thinner record than the ghost tours: 455 reviews. It's family-friendly, theatrical rather than gory by the page's own description, and it ends with a group photo at the Charles IV statue.

What it is: A family-run company sends a guide in nightwatchman costume on a 90-minute walk from the Powder Tower through the Old Town to Charles Bridge.
Good to know: Meet in front of the Powder Tower at Namesti Republiky 5; finishes with a group photo at the Charles IV statue by Charles Bridge. Families are welcome: the page calls the content theatrical rather than graphic.
After dark: It retraces the medieval night watch's round, horn call included, so walking it by lantern light after dark is the whole conceit.

The one that goes down. A costumed guide from Prague Tours tells Old Town ghost stories, then takes you into a 13th-century cellar and a dungeon with torture instruments. Rated 4.8 from 3,153 reviews on Viator, it's the best-proven tour in the city. Odd thing: the same tour on GetYourGuide rates 4.3, so book it here. At $31 (€28) for about 70 to 85 minutes, value is what holds it at second. No children under 6, no toilets underground, groups capped at 26. Meet at the ticket office in the passage at Malé náměstí 459/11.

What it is: A costumed guide from Prague Tours walks you through Old Town ghost stories, then takes you down into the medieval underground and a dungeon with torture instruments.
Good to know: Meet at the ticket office inside the passage at Male namesti 459/11 (20 m right of the Black Angel bar), 5 to 10 minutes before the start, and the tour ends back there. Entry fees are included, tips and drinks are not; no children under 6, no toilets underground, groups capped at 26.
After dark: After dark the lanes around Old Town Square empty out and the descent into a 13th-century cellar and dungeon lands harder than it would at noon.

The cheapest tour on the page, $19 (€17) on sale today (it was $21 (€18.80)), for up to two hours. That value pushes it to third even though its 4.7 rating is lower than the two above. Mysterium Tours sends a storyteller in period dress with a lantern from Old Town Square to the Old Jewish Cemetery. Meet outside the Cartier store next to the Czech Tourism office. It runs rain or shine and you can't record it. Honestly, for a first night in Prague, this is the safe pick.

Three hours, the longest walk here, which makes the hourly price very low: $32 (€29) all in. McGee's starts on Týnská behind the Týn Church (627/7, not 627/8), takes you up to the castle complex and Golden Lane in the evening, then walks you down through Malá Strana. It ends at Malostranská metro. Everything is outside; you don't go into any building. A tram ticket of about $1.70 (€1.50) is on you, and groups run up to 30. A 2.5-hour Vltava cruise with a live jazz band, leaving around 8:00 p.m. and passing under Charles Bridge with the castle floodlit above. It's the only boat on this page and the only option that's a sit-down evening. It's also $55 (€49) before food, and the three-course menus cost extra, which is what pulls it down to fifth. Rated 4.7 from 2,206 reviews. The pier depends on the option you book, so check your voucher, and boarding starts about 15 minutes before departure.

The jumpy one. Prague Articulate runs 90 minutes in English only, with special effects and a bit of ghost hunting, from the left side of the Astronomical Clock (look for the red house with the big window). Not a sightseeing tour. Fun in Prague walks you through three pubs with a drink in each and sits you down to a traditional Czech dinner, a choice of five dishes, over three hours. At $73 (€65) it's the priciest night here, and the after-dark angle is weaker than the ghost walks, so it's tenth. Rated 4.6 from 633 reviews. Minimum age 18, not for pregnant women. What a Prague night is actually like
Old Town Square stays busy until late. The Astronomical Clock draws a crowd on the hour, the cafés keep their terraces lit, and half the ghost tours in the city start within sight of the Týn Church. Walk two streets off the square and it's quiet.
Charles Bridge is the other magnet. At night it belongs to photographers and couples, and the bridge towers are lit at both ends.
Then there's the castle. The Prague Castle grounds are open from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. all year, according to the castle's own site, so you can walk the courtyards after dark. The historic buildings are a different matter: they close at 5 p.m. from April to October and at 4 p.m. from November to March. Every night tour that goes up there, including both castle walks on this page, is an outdoor tour. Nobody's getting you inside St. Vitus at 9 p.m.
Malá Strana, below the castle, goes quiet early. Pubs are everywhere else.
Ghost walk, castle walk or boat: how to pick
One night? Do a ghost walk in the Old Town. They're short, under $31 (€28), and they all start between Old Town Square and Charles Bridge, so you can eat first and walk to the meeting point.
Which ghost walk depends on two things.
Underground or not. Only the Prague Tours dungeon walk goes below street level.
Kids. The dungeon tour bars under-6s and McGee's ghost walk bars under-10s. The nightwatchman walk is the family one.
Ghost tour meeting points are crowded. Several operators use costumed guides with lanterns in the same few squares, so find your operator's sign or umbrella, not just a man in a cloak.
The castle walks are for views. Pick the 3-hour McGee's if you want Golden Lane and the walk down through Malá Strana, the 90-minute Your Boutique Guide walk if you just want the courtyards and the panorama.
And the jazz boat is the only real sit-down option. It's a nice evening and it's not cheap.
The free version: up to the castle and back over the bridge
You don't need a guide for the castle at night. Here's the walk, and it's the best free evening in the city.
Cross Charles Bridge from the Old Town side after dark. Keep straight on into Malá Strana and climb Nerudova street, which gets steeper than you'd think. At the top you're on Hradčanské náměstí, the square in front of the castle gates. Go in, walk through the courtyards to the cathedral, and keep an eye on the time: the grounds close at 10 p.m.
Come down the Old Castle Steps at the east end. The view over the red roofs to the river is better from there than from anywhere a tour stops. At the bottom is Malostranská metro, or walk back to the bridge.
Before 9 p.m. in June this is a daylight walk. In winter you can do it at 6 p.m. in full dark.
Getting back late: Prague's night trams
Prague is easy late at night. When the day network winds down, night trams 91 to 99 take over, running roughly from midnight to 5 a.m. every 30 minutes, according to the transit authority PID. Every night line meets at Lazarská in the New Town, where transfers between them are guaranteed. The city's visitor site adds that night buses 901 to 915 cover the outer areas and that trams run every 20 minutes on Friday and Saturday nights.
Tickets are the same as by day. A 30-minute ticket is $1.80 (€1.60; CZK 39) on paper or $1.70 (€1.50; CZK 36) in the PID Lítačka app; a 90-minute one is $2.30 (€2.10; CZK 50) on paper. A 24-hour ticket costs $6.90 (€6.20; CZK 150) on paper.
Most tours here finish in the Old Town well before the night trams start, so you'll be walking or catching a regular tram anyway.
When to go: dark early in winter, late in June
In December it's dark by 4:39 p.m., so any evening tour is a night tour. In June it isn't dark until 9:57 p.m., and full dark comes after 11 p.m., which means a 7 p.m. ghost walk in summer happens in daylight. October is a good middle: dark by 6:45 p.m. mid-month.
Winter nights are properly cold. January lows average about 28°F (-2°C) in the pack's weather data, and December about 31°F (-0.3°C). The castle walk is exposed up top. Wear a hat.
Summer is the opposite problem: July nights stay around 60°F (15°C), pleasant, and the tours are light until late. Pick the latest slot the booking calendar shows.
The Advent cruise we looked at didn't clear our bar, so there's no Christmas-specific tour on this page. The Old Town at Christmas doesn't need one.
What to skip
The pub crawls. Every one we checked rated 4.1 or 4.2. Drink in a pub instead.
The 50-minute evening river cruise (4.2) and the evening buffet dinner cruise (4.3) also fell short. If you want the river, the jazz boat is the one.
And don't book the GetYourGuide listing of the underground dungeon tour. It's the same tour as our number two, but it rates 4.3 there against 4.8 on Viator.

For the cheapest well-rated walk, Mysterium's Ghosts and Legends tour at $19 (€17) on sale. Our overall number one, the Nightwatchman walk, is history told in costume more than ghosts.
Can you visit Prague Castle at night?
The grounds, yes, until 10 p.m. The castle's official site gives the complex hours as 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. all year. The buildings close at 5 p.m. in summer and 4 p.m. in winter, so at night you see courtyards, the cathedral outside and the views, never the interiors.
Is Prague safe at night for tourists?
The Old Town and Malá Strana are busy and well lit late, and the tours on this page stay in those areas. Keep an eye on your phone in crowds on Charles Bridge and Old Town Square. Our night tour safety guide covers the general rules.
Does public transport run all night in Prague?
Yes. PID's night trams, lines 91 to 99, run roughly from midnight to 5 a.m. every 30 minutes and all meet at Lazarská. A 30-minute paper ticket costs $1.80 (€1.60; CZK 39).
Are Prague ghost tours OK for kids?
Mostly. The Nightwatchman walk and Mysterium's walk are family-friendly. The dungeon tour takes children from 6, McGee's ghost walk from 10, and Prague Articulate takes kids but warns about blunt descriptions of violence. The beer tour is 18+.
