Night bus tours

#1: Bangkok by Night tuk-tuk, 8.8 26 tours scored, 12 ranked Best US city: Washington, DC

A night bus tour sells you a seat and a route past things that are lit up. That's the deal. You don't walk much, you see a lot, and you hear a guide (or a recording) while the city goes by.

We use "bus" loosely. Of the 26 tours we scored, the coaches and open-top double-deckers are only part of it. The rest are 12-seat vans in Washington, DC, tuk-tuks in Bangkok, a golf cart in Rome, sidecars in Paris and Barcelona, a pink Jeep in Las Vegas and a sports car to a Tokyo car meet. Anything with wheels and a guide counts.

Here's the honest part. The big hop-on hop-off brands run night loops in most of our cities, and they rate badly. Big Bus at night came in at 3.5 in Berlin, 3.7 in London on Viator, 4.2 in Las Vegas and 4.3 in DC. Paris night buses were 3.5 to 3.8, Rome 3.4, Mexico City's Turibus 3.3. None made our list.

What did make it is smaller, stops more and usually costs more. The ranking below is our Night Score, capped at three per city. Here's how the score works.

Bangkok by Night: Temples, Markets and Food Tuk-Tuk Tour

8.8/10Night Score
  • From $38 (€34)
  • 4 hours
  • Starts: Evening
  • Small group, 10+
  • 4.9 (4,182 reviews)

The highest Night Score on this page, and it's not close. Expique packs four hours into a tuk-tuk evening: Thonburi's food streets, Wat Prayurawongsawat, the Pak Khlong Talat flower market when it's busiest, the floodlit old city, the Giant Swing and Chinatown. Rated 4.9 from 4,182 reviews, and at $38 (€34) it works out to $9.50 (€8.50) an hour with dinner tastings included. Two people per tuk-tuk, minimum age 10. It's alcohol-free. Meet at Krung Thonburi BTS exit 1; it ends about 11 p.m. with a short drop-off.

What it is: Expique runs a small-group tuk-tuk evening from Krung Thonburi through Thonburi's food streets, Wat Prayurawongsawat, the flower market, the floodlit old city and the Giant Swing to Chinatown.

Good to know: Tuk-tuk, guide, dinner tastings with soft drinks and dessert, water and a limited-distance drop-off are included; the tour is alcohol-free. Meets at Krung Thonburi BTS exit 1 (Green Line), two people per tuk-tuk, minimum age 10 on the small-group option; the page says it is not advisable for young children.

After dark: It is built for the night: the Pak Khlong Talat flower market is busiest after dark, Wat Pho and the Grand Palace walls are floodlit, and Chinatown's street food peaks late.

The best US option, and the reason is the van. See DC Today puts 12 people in each one, so it parks close, everyone gets off fast and you can hear the guide at the Lincoln Memorial. Ten stops in three hours from the Grand Hyatt on H Street. Rated 4.9 from 1,729 reviews. At $99 (€88) it's the priciest per hour of the DC three, which is what drags its value score. Gratuities are included; Capitol admission isn't, and some stops are drive-by. Runs rain or shine. Our Washington, DC page has the rest.

A perfect 5.0, on 353 reviews, which is why it sits just behind See DC Today rather than ahead. Heart of DC Tours runs the same idea: 12-seat van, live guide, a loop of the lit memorials. What a night bus tour actually is

Three kinds, really.

Big coaches and open-top double-deckers. Fifty seats or more, a fixed loop, sometimes a few walking stops. Cheap per hour. The DC coaches and the London open-top are the good ones. TopView's New York open-top takes up to 65 and makes no stops, and many reviewers say the promised live guide was a recording.

Small vans and carts. Seven to 15 people. More stops, faster in and out, and the guide is close enough to hear. That's why the DC vans rank where they do.

Tuk-tuks, sidecars, golf carts, Jeeps. Open air, two to six to a vehicle. More fun, and in Bangkok much cheaper than a coach anywhere. In Paris and Barcelona the private sidecars cost $183 to $205 (€163 to €183) a person.

What separates a good one from a dud

Do you get off? A bus that drives past the Lincoln Memorial is a window. One that parks and lets you climb the steps is a night out. Read the itinerary for walking stops, and for the words "drive-by".

Live guide or recording. The London open-top on this list has a live English-speaking guide. Check, every time.

Is it dark yet? London's operator warns that early departures in May, June and July are in daylight. TopView in New York says take the 8 p.m. bus in summer, because 6 p.m. is still light. A lights tour in daylight is a bus ride.

Open or closed top. Open is better for the view and miserable in rain or wind. The DC convertibles switch to glass tops from October to March, and the Neon Museum bus in Vegas gets cold up top.

Watch the upgrades. Some DC night coaches sell museum or Washington Monument tickets as add-ons. They're valid the next available day, at a time the attraction assigns, not during your night tour.

Where night bus tours are best

Washington, DC, by a mile in the US. Seven of the 26 tours we scored are there. The National Park Service says the memorials on the Mall can be visited 24 hours a day, and they're lit and spread out over a long, dim walk. A van solves a real problem there.

Bangkok, where a tuk-tuk at night is cheap, fast and gets you to the flower market and Chinatown in one go. New York in December for Dyker Heights, and otherwise only if walking is hard. London for one late open-top loop.

Skip the bus in Las Vegas unless you need a driver: the Fremont Street canopy's Viva Vision show runs on the hour from 6 p.m. to 2 a.m. and it's free. Same in Paris, where the Eiffel Tower sparkles for five minutes at the start of each hour after dusk, for nothing. No Paris night bus cleared our bar; only a private golf cart and a sidecar ride did.

Nothing qualified at all in Boston, Berlin, Vienna, San Francisco, Tokyo (apart from the car meet) or Mexico City.

What night bus tours cost

Big coaches and trolleys run $48 to $69 (€43 to €62) for 90 minutes to three hours in the US, and $33 (€29) for the 90-minute London loop. Small vans cost more: $89 to $103 (€80 to €92). The Bangkok tuk-tuks are $38 (€34) with food.

Private gets steep. DC's private night tour is $595 (€532) for up to four, $695 (€621) for five to ten, which is actually reasonable split ten ways. Singapore's private car evenings are $149 (€133) and $175 (€156) per person.

Tips vary. The DC vans and coaches on this list include gratuities. Chicago's crime bus asks for $5 (€4.50) or more per person on top.

Night bus tours with kids

This is the kid-friendly night tour. Most have no minimum age, there's a seat, and a tired six-year-old can sleep between stops. Dyker Heights lets children up to 3 ride free on a lap. Big Bus in New York lets under-3s go free.

The exceptions: Expique in Bangkok is 10 and up and says it isn't advisable for young children, the Barcelona sidecar is 7 and up, and the Rome golf cart is 18+. The New Jersey skyline van makes you bring your own child seats.

Safety, and when not to bother

Confirm the pickup. Pink Jeep reviewers in Las Vegas report missed pickups and skipped stops, and the operator's page says to confirm 24 hours ahead. Dress for the top deck or an open cart: the DC e-cart page says bring layers from October, and the Jersey City waterfront on the skyline van is cold and windy. On the DC vans some walking is on poorly lit paths. Our safety guide covers getting back.

When not to bother: if your group is fit and the city is compact. In DC you can walk the Mall yourself, from the Washington Monument along the Reflecting Pool to the Lincoln, for free. A bus earns its money when the sights are far apart or someone in your party can't walk far. Otherwise, walk.

Every other night bus tour we scored

The rest of the 26 night bus tours we scored, best first. They cleared our bar but lost out on score, or on the three-per-city cap.

Frequently asked questions

Are night bus tours worth it?

In a few cities, yes. In Washington, DC a small van gets you round lit memorials that are far apart, and in Bangkok a tuk-tuk night is cheap and covers a lot. Most big hop-on brands' night loops rated under 4.4, so we'd skip those.

What is the best night bus tour in Washington, DC?

By our Night Score, See DC Today's small-group National Mall night tour (7.8): 12 to a van, ten stops, $99 (€88). The cheapest good option is USA Guided Tours' 7:30 p.m. coach at $58 (€52).

Is an open-top bus worth it at night?

For the view, yes, if it's dry and you take a late departure. In London's summer, early departures are still in daylight. In winter, dress like you're standing still outside for 90 minutes, because you are.

Can you see the Dyker Heights Christmas lights on a bus tour?

Yes, but the bus drops you off. Buses can't enter Dyker Heights, so the Scatto a New York tour includes about an hour on foot. It runs roughly late November to late December; the page lists no exact dates.

Are night bus tours good for kids?

They're the easiest night tour with kids: a seat, short walks and usually no minimum age. Check exceptions like Expique in Bangkok (10+) and the Rome golf cart (18+).
