Covers London, Edinburgh, Dublin and Central Europe, where the ghost walks are old and the summer nights are short.

Let's be straight about Vienna. It isn't a night tour city.
We went looking hard and only four tours cleared our bar, against ten in Prague and Budapest. The evening bus tours rated between 3.9 and 4.1. The Danube evening cruise scored 3.5. A Schönbrunn after-hours ticket came in at 4.1 and the Schönbrunn evening with dinner and a concert at 4.3. The best-rated ghost tour we found is in German, and nothing on its page puts it in the evening.
That's not because Vienna is dull after dark. It's because the city's evenings were never built around a guide with an umbrella. People here go to a concert, stand at the back of the opera for the price of a sandwich, or ride a tram out to the vineyards and sit in a wine tavern until the pine branch comes down.
So this page ranks the four tours that are good, and then spends most of its length on what to do instead.

The 4 best night tours in Vienna, ranked
Every tour we scored in Vienna that cleared our bar (rated 4.4 or more from 50+ reviews), in Night Score order. Night Score = 30% rating, 10% review count, 20% price per hour, 40% how much the night is the point. How we score
The only English ghost walk in Vienna that cleared our bar, and a decent one. Vienna Bespoke sends a state-certified Austria Guide on 90 minutes from the Albertina past the Hofburg and through the old lanes to St. Stephen's Cathedral, which is where reviewers say the dark does the work. Rated 4.8 from 271 reviews; it's $34 (€30) with tips included. It's on top because the city's other ghost walks are either German or rated lower. Meet at Helmut-Zilk-Platz, in front of the memorial against war and fascism, and look for the red-and-white umbrella. The page calls it fine for all ages.

What it is: Vienna Bespoke sends a state-certified Austria Guide on a 90-minute ghost walk from the Albertina through the Hofburg area to St. Stephen's Cathedral.
Good to know: Meet at Helmut-Zilk-Platz in front of the memorial against war and fascism (red-and-white umbrella); ends at St. Stephen's. The page calls it appropriate for all ages; tips are included. Also sold on Viator (d454-185959P12).
After dark: Reviewers single out the imperial palace and old alleys seen in the dark, which change the feel of a city that is all grand facades by day.

5.0 (158 reviews)
A perfect 5.0 from 158 reviews, and you'd expect it to win. Price is what stops it: $189 (€169) for four hours. What you get is a coffeehouse stop, an Austrian dinner with a glass of wine or beer, then two cocktail bars, with groups capped at 8 to 12 by Wolfy's Adventures. A public transport ticket is included; tips aren't. It's 18+. Meet in front of Wein & Co at Jasomirgottstrasse 3/5, by St. Stephen's, and it ends back at the cathedral. If you want one paid evening in Vienna, this is it.

What it is: Wolfy's Adventures leads a 4-hour small-group evening of a coffeehouse stop, an Austrian dinner with wine or beer, and two bars with a handcrafted cocktail.
Good to know: Meet in front of Wein & Co at Jasomirgottstrasse 3/5; ends at St. Stephen's Cathedral. Includes dinner, a glass of wine or beer, two bar drinks and a public transport ticket; gratuities extra. 18+; the page gives a cap of 8 to 12. The GetYourGuide version (t468408) has only 32 reviews.
After dark: It moves from a coffeehouse to dinner to two cocktail bars as the city shifts into its evening rhythm.

The pub crawl, and it's cheap: $11 (€9.80) for four hours, with club entry included. That entry price is what gives it a maxed-out value score. The 4.4 rating is the bare minimum we accept, which is why it's third. Vienna Nights takes an international group through three bars and clubs with games and free shots when you buy drinks, so the real cost depends on you. Meet at Dick Mack's Irish Pub on Marc-Aurel-Strasse 7, five minutes from Schwedenplatz. 18+, and the club at the end changes by night.

Private
5.0 (87 reviews)
Rated 5.0 from 87 reviews, private, and $234 (€209). It's last for two reasons. The price, obviously. And the start time: Intrepid Urban Adventures begins at 4:00 p.m., so in summer most of the four hours happen in daylight and it's only an after-dark tour from late autumn to winter. You get two food stops, a coffeehouse, a Viennese dinner and two bars, with drinks, metro tickets and tips included. It starts at Wein & Co on the Graben and ends at the State Opera. Book it for November, not June.

What it is: Intrepid Urban Adventures runs a private 4-hour food and drink walk with two food stops, a coffeehouse, a Viennese dinner and two bars.
Good to know: Meet at Wein & Co on the Graben (Jasomirgottstrasse 3/5); ends at the Vienna State Opera. Dinner, drinks, metro tickets and gratuities are included. The starting time is early, so in summer most of it is in daylight.
After dark: It starts in daylight at 4 p.m. and ends after dark at the Opera, so the later bar stops get the evening city; in summer it ends before sunset.

What a Vienna night is actually like
The Innere Stadt goes quiet early on a weeknight. The palace facades on the Ring are lit, the cafés empty out, and around St. Stephen's you get the last tourists and the people coming out of the concert halls.
The evening is indoors. Vienna's big nights are the State Opera, the Musikverein and the Konzerthaus, and the streets around them fill twice: before the curtain and after it.
The other Vienna evening is out on the edge of the city. The wine taverns in Grinzing, Nussdorf and Stammersdorf are where locals actually go on a warm night, and no tour on the market does them well enough to rank.
The bars are around Schwedenplatz and the canal, which is where the pub crawl starts.
What to do instead of a tour
This is the real advice on this page.
Stand at the opera. The Vienna State Opera sells standing places for that day's performance from 80 minutes before the start, at the Standing Room Box Office, and each costs at most $20 (€18). The opera says a fixed number are always kept back for the box office, even when the online shop shows none. There are 92 standing places on the balcony and 210 in the gallery, each with its own subtitle screen. Queue early for a popular night. It's the best-value evening in Europe, and I don't think that's close.
Go to a Heuriger. A Heuriger is a Viennese wine tavern serving its own wine with simple food, and the culture is on UNESCO's intangible heritage list, according to the city tourist board. Look for a bunch of pine branches over the door and a sign reading Ausg'steckt: that's how a genuine one tells you it's open. Grinzing is the famous one and the busiest. Nussdorf, Sievering, Neustift and Stammersdorf over the Danube are calmer. Smaller places only open on certain dates, so check before you ride out.
Ride the wheel late. The Riesenrad in the Prater is listed by the tourist board as open daily from 9 a.m. to 11:45 p.m., and a standard ticket is $16.20 (€14.50). In the dark you get the whole city lit below you for less than any tour here.
One more, from our researcher's notes: the Light of Creation show in the Votivkirche, a 30-minute evening light show inside the church, is rated 4.8 from 10,816 reviews. It's a show, not a tour, so it isn't ranked. If you like that sort of thing, it's a good half hour.
Picking between the four
Easy. Want the old city in the dark with stories? The ghost walk. It's 90 minutes and $34 (€30), done in time for a late dinner.
Want a proper evening out with food and drink, and don't mind paying for it? Wolfy's small group. The private Intrepid evening is the same idea for twice the money, and in summer it isn't dark for most of it.
The pub crawl is for travelers in their twenties who'd like company. It's not about Vienna.
Getting back late: Wiener Linien at night
Vienna's transport is good at night, better than most capitals. The U-Bahn runs from about 5 a.m. to about midnight on weeknights, according to the tourist board. On Friday and Saturday nights and the nights before public holidays it runs all night, every 15 minutes.
The rest of the week, NightLine buses take over. They run every night from 12:30 a.m. to 5 a.m., every 30 minutes, and they take ordinary Wiener Linien tickets.
Since 1 January 2026 a single ticket costs $3.60 (€3.20) and a 24-hour ticket $11.40 (€10.20), says Wiener Linien. The 48- and 72-hour tickets have been discontinued, so don't look for them.
Coming back from a Heuriger in Grinzing or Stammersdorf, check the last tram before you order the next glass.
When to go: winter is Vienna's night season
It's dark by 4:37 p.m. in December, so the ghost walk and even the 4 p.m. Intrepid tour are after dark. In June it isn't dark until 9:37 p.m. Summer evenings are for the Heurigen gardens and the Prater, not for ghosts.
Winter is cold. January nights fall to about 29°F (-1.8°C) in the pack's ten-year weather data. July nights stay around 63°F (17°C).
The Christmas markets are the strongest argument for a winter trip. The tourist board lists the 2026 market on Rathausplatz from November 13 to December 26, open until 10 p.m. (6:30 p.m. on Christmas Eve). Spittelberg runs November 13 to December 23, until 9:30 p.m., and it's the nicer of the two. Schönbrunn opens November 6 and keeps going to January 6, 2027, closing at 9 p.m. The Christmas bus tour we checked didn't clear our bar.
What to skip
The evening bus tours. Big Bus rated 4.1 on GetYourGuide and 3.9 on Viator, the Panoramic Night Tour 3.9, and the Vienna by Night tour with the Riesenrad 3.3. Take the tram around the Ring instead; it's the same view.
The Danube evening cruise, at 3.5. The Danube isn't in the city center, and the boat doesn't fix that.
And look twice at the Central Cemetery twilight tour. It has a Friday evening option and a 4.7 rating, but the page shows $202 (€180) a person, which looks like a private-group price. Ask the operator before you book.

Frequently asked questions
Are there ghost tours in Vienna?
Yes, a few. The one we rank is Vienna Bespoke's Spooky Ghost Tour in English, 4.8 from 271 reviews, from the Albertina to St. Stephen's. A German-language tour rates higher but nothing on its page shows it running in the evening, and a separate Ghosts and Legends night walk rated 4.3, below our bar.
What is there to do in Vienna at night?
Concerts and opera, mostly. Standing places at the State Opera cost at most $20 (€18) and go on sale 80 minutes before the performance. After that: a Heuriger wine tavern in Grinzing or Stammersdorf, the Riesenrad until 11:45 p.m., or the Christmas markets from mid-November.
Does the Vienna U-Bahn run all night?
On Friday and Saturday nights and the nights before public holidays, yes, every 15 minutes. Other nights it stops around midnight and NightLine buses run from 12:30 a.m. to 5 a.m. every 30 minutes.
How much is a single ticket in Vienna?
$3.60 (€3.20) since 1 January 2026, according to Wiener Linien. A 24-hour ticket is $11.40 (€10.20). The 48- and 72-hour tickets were discontinued.
Is a Vienna night tour worth it?
The ghost walk and the Wolfy's dinner evening are. Most other evening products in Vienna rated below 4.4, and the city's best nights (opera standing room, a wine tavern) don't need a guide.
Vienna Tourist Board: public transport operating hours– U-Bahn about 5 a.m. to midnight, all night Friday, Saturday and before holidays every 15 minutes; NightLine 12:30 to 5 a.m. every 30 minutes, checked October 26, 2026
