Lisbon does dusk better than it does midnight. The Tagus is wide, the sun goes down behind the 25 de Abril Bridge, and the whole riverfront turns orange and then blue. Most of the city's best evening products are built around that half hour.
So four of the ten tours below are sunset sails or cruises, and the top one is a small sailboat from Alcântara that costs $38 (€34). Two Bairro Alto pub crawls come next. Then a ghost walk that isn't in Lisbon at all, two fado walks and a disco boat. The order is our Night Score.
A word on the sunset trips. Our scoring gives them a 6 out of 10 on the after-dark factor, not higher, because they're on the water as the light goes rather than deep into the night. In winter that matters. Sunset in December is around 5:16 p.m., so a sunset sail is over before most Lisboetas think about dinner.
What didn't make it: Lisbon's own ghost walks. All of them had too few reviews.

The only ghost walk that cleared our bar for this page, and it's in Sintra, not Lisbon. Two hours of legends through Sintra village once the day-trippers have gone, starting at the viewpoint by the library near Sintra station. 4.9, but from only 61 reviews, which is what drags it down. $29 (€26). Max 8, English only, not for under-12s. Getting there and back by train is up to you, so check the last train back to Lisbon before you book. Worth it if you're staying in Sintra.

Caldo verde, grilled chouriço, bread and wine are included. A 4.96 rating is the best in Lisbon, but 132 reviews is thin and $95 (€85) for three hours is the priciest tour here, so it ranks eighth. Max 8. It starts at the Chapel of Nossa Senhora da Saúde in Martim Moniz. Not for small children or anyone who struggles on steep streets.

The later slots sail fully in the dark, and reviewers mention a 7 p.m. one. 4.5 from 492 reviews is what holds it ninth. It leaves from the Sul e Sueste river station, ticket booth 1. The cheaper fado night, and you can tell. It's well proven, 1,004 reviews, and $62 (€55) for four hours with a set dinner is good value. The 4.4 rating is why it ranks last. Lisbon Destination Tours meets on the second floor of the Lisbon Destination Hostel inside Rossio station, walks Mouraria, the birthplace of fado, and ends at a fado house in Alfama for dinner with one drink. Extra drinks cost more. It's steep. If you can afford the Lisboa Autêntica walk, take that one.

What Lisbon is actually like after dark
The day ends on the miradouros. São Pedro de Alcântara, Santa Luzia and Senhora do Monte are the city's viewpoints, and at sunset they're packed with people holding a beer from the kiosk. They're free.
After dinner, Bairro Alto takes over. It's a grid of narrow streets where the bars are tiny and the drinking happens outside, on the cobbles, shoulder to shoulder. Later, the crowd drifts downhill to Cais do Sodré and the clubs. Both pub crawls on this page follow that route.
Fado is the other Lisbon night. It's sung in Alfama and Mouraria, in small houses where dinner and the music come together. A seated fado show isn't a tour, so we don't rank them. The two fado walks here are tours that end at one.
You don't need a ticket for any of it. The river and the viewpoints are the show.
Sail, crawl or fado: how to pick
One sunset sail. Not two. Saildreams is the best value and the smallest boat. Rent a Boat from Belém is the most proven. Terra Incógnita is the one with the open bar. They're all two hours and they all do the same thing: out on the Tagus as the sun drops, back under the lit bridge.
If you're under 30 and travelling alone, do a pub crawl. The Purple crawl gives you more for the money, and it meets at a viewpoint rather than a statue. The Discover Lisbon one starts at 10 p.m., which suits people who've had a late dinner.
For fado, I'd spend the extra on Lisboa Autêntica. Eight people and a singer walking with you is a different evening from a big group and a set menu.
Start at Miradouro de Santa Luzia in Alfama just before sunset, with the river and the domes below you. Walk down through Alfama's lanes as it gets dark. Listen at the doors of the fado houses; you'll hear more than you'd think.
Then cross Baixa. Praça do Comércio at night is huge and quiet, with the triumphal arch lit at one end and the river at the other. Climb up through Chiado to Bairro Alto and end at São Pedro de Alcântara, the viewpoint where the Purple crawl meets, looking across at the castle on its hill.
It's steep all the way. Wear proper shoes. The cobbles are polished stone and slippery when wet.
Getting back late
The metro closes early for a city that goes out this late. Metropolitano de Lisboa runs from 6:30 a.m. to 1 a.m. every day, weekends included. That's it. There's no extended Friday or Saturday service.
Both pub crawls run five hours, and the Discover Lisbon one starts at 10 p.m. You will not be on the metro home. Budget for a taxi or a ride-hailing app from Cais do Sodré, and don't take a ride from someone touting outside a club.

When to go: sunsets, mild winters and a dry summer
The clocks went back on 25 October and sunset is now around 6:20 to 6:30 p.m. By December it's dark at 5:46. In June you wait until 9:34 p.m. The table below has every month.
That swing changes the sunset sails more than anything else. In summer a sunset sail is an evening out. In winter it's a late afternoon that ends in the dark, which some people prefer: you're off the boat in time for a proper dinner.
Winter nights are mild. January lows in our weather data are around 48°F (9°C). Summer nights sit in the mid-60s (about 18°C). The real difference is rain. November and March each bring about 11 rain days, while July and August have almost none. Boats cancel for bad weather, so in winter keep a spare evening.
Christmas lights tours start in late November. None that we found has cleared our bar.
What to skip
Skip the Lisbon ghost walks for now. Every one our researcher found had too few reviews to rank, from 27 to 47. A "Mysteries of Lisbon" night walk showed two contradictory ratings on its own page and no price.
Skip the Christmas lights tuk-tuks too. The one with a rating scored 3.9 from 7 reviews.
A near miss: a fado show, dinner and minivan night tour scored 4.4 on our Night Score, outside the list.
