DC Monuments at Night

#1: See DC Today van, 7.8 Memorials open 24 hours 8 tours ranked

Here's the thing nobody selling these tours leads with. You don't need them to get in.

The National Park Service says the public may visit the sites of the National Mall and Memorial Parks 24 hours a day. No ticket, no gate, no closing time. The Lincoln, the Jefferson, the Korean War and Vietnam Veterans memorials, the MLK and FDR memorials are all open at midnight and lit.

What a tour sells is the gap between them. The Jefferson is across the Tidal Basin from the rest, the paths in between are dim, and after a day of museums very few people want to walk the whole loop in the dark.

So the question isn't whether to see the memorials at night. You should. It's whether you want a van, a coach, a cart or your own feet. We ranked eight monument night tours to help with that.

7.8/10Night Score
  • From $99 (€88)
  • 3 hours
  • Starts: Early evening
  • Small group
  • 4.9 (1,729 reviews)

Top spot on rating strength: 4.9 from 1,729 Viator reviews. See DC Today caps each van at 12, which means faster stops and a guide you can actually hear. At $99 (€88) it's the most expensive shared option, so the value score holds it back. Know going in that some of the ten stops are drive-by and U.S. Capitol admission isn't part of it. Tip included, starts from the Grand Hyatt on H Street, runs rain or shine.

The official after-dark access

Short version: there's nothing to book.

The NPS lists the memorials of National Mall and Memorial Parks as open 24 hours a day, every day. Its Jefferson Memorial page says the same for that site. Rangers are on duty to answer questions from 9:30 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. daily, and the park's plan-your-visit page calls early evening one of the beautiful and tranquil times to go.

One exception. The Washington Monument elevator ride is a daytime thing: the NPS lists it as open 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., closed on Independence Day and Christmas Day plus one maintenance day a month. At night you see the obelisk lit from the ground, and that's it.

The Park Service also runs nighttime walks with a park ranger. They're free and posted on its events calendar rather than offered every night.

Tours versus doing it yourself

Same memorials either way. The difference is legs, time and stories.

A tour gets you the Jefferson, which is the stop self-guided walkers drop. It also gets you somebody who knows why the Korean War soldiers wear ponchos and what the inscriptions say before you're close enough to read them. Most tours run three hours and cover ten or more stops. On foot you'll see fewer in the same time.

The DIY loop: Washington Monument, west along the Reflecting Pool, Lincoln Memorial, the Korean War and Vietnam memorials either side, then south to the MLK Memorial and the FDR Memorial along the Tidal Basin, ending at the Jefferson. It's flat and long. The lit parts are lovely and the stretches between are dark. Don't do it alone if you'd feel uneasy.

I'd book a van for a first night and walk the Lincoln end again on my own the next.

What you see at night that you don't by day

Lincoln, lit from inside the chamber, looking out over a black Reflecting Pool. The Jefferson dome doubled in the Tidal Basin. The Korean War statues half in shadow in the juniper beds, which is far more unsettling than at noon.

Mostly, though, you see the memorials without a crowd.

Daytime on the Lincoln steps is shoulder to shoulder with school groups. After 9 p.m. it's runners, couples and photographers. You can stand in front of the Vietnam wall and actually read names. The heat goes too: July night lows sit near 71°F (22°C), against day highs around 89°F (32°C).

When to go

Dark falls at 6:57 p.m. in October and 5:17 p.m. in December, so a 7:00 or 7:30 p.m. tour is fully at night for half the year. In June it isn't dark until 9:06 p.m., and the first hour of an early tour is daylight. Pick a later slot in summer if there is one.

Winter nights are cold, with lows around 28°F (-2°C) in January. That matters most on the open carts and the open-air trolley.

December adds the White House and Capitol holiday lights on Signature Tours' route. Late March to early April is cherry blossom season around the Tidal Basin, and the Jefferson at night under the blossoms is about as good as this city looks.

Gaps and things to skip

No night cruise. The Potomac moonlight and sunset cruises our researcher found rated 4.1, below our bar.

No night access inside the Washington Monument, the White House or the Capitol, whatever the product titles suggest. Several coach tours sell museum or monument tickets as upgrades. Those run on a later day at a time the attraction assigns.

For the city's ghost walks in Georgetown and around Lafayette Square, see our Washington, DC night tours page.

Frequently asked questions

Can you visit the DC monuments at night?

Yes, free and with no booking. The NPS says the memorials of the National Mall are open 24 hours a day. Rangers are on duty until 10:00 p.m.

Are the DC monuments lit up at night?

The main memorials are floodlit after dark, which is why every tour on this page exists. The Lincoln Memorial's chamber is lit from inside, and the Jefferson reflects in the Tidal Basin.

Can you go up the Washington Monument at night?

No. The NPS lists the Washington Monument as open 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. daily, closed July 4, December 25 and one maintenance day a month. You can walk around its base at any hour.

How long does a DC monuments night tour take?

Most take three hours. The electric cart tour is two hours and the Old Town Trolley is two and a half. A 7:30 p.m. start means you're finished around 10:30 p.m.

Is it better to see the DC monuments at night or during the day?

Night, for the lit memorials and the empty steps. Day, if you want to go up the Washington Monument or into the museums. Many people do the Mall by day and come back for the memorials after dark.
