Book by the moon, not by the operator. That's the single most useful thing on this page.
A bioluminescent tour takes you out at night onto a lagoon or bay where microscopic plankton light up when the water moves. Paddle, and the blade leaves a glowing trail. Trail a hand over the side and it lights up. Under a bright moon, much of that disappears, and every operator we read says so. A tour on the wrong night is a two-hour paddle in the dark. Pleasant enough. Not what you paid for.
All ten tours ranked here are in two places: Puerto Rico's three bio bays and the lagoons of Florida's Space Coast. None of them is near one of our 32 cities. We scored 15 in all. Today, October 26, is a full moon, which is exactly the wrong night to go.

That's why it scores a 10 on darkness and ranks first: 4.9 on 357 reviews, $65 (€58) for two hours, child rates lower. Up to 13 per boat. Reviewers mention 6:30, 9 and 11 p.m. departures; the late ones are darker. They also say the glow is best after a sunny day near the new moon. Towels included.

Dinoflagellate glow peaks in summer (roughly June to October); comb jellies glow in the cooler months
Florida's best-proven bio tour, with 932 reviews at 4.8, and that track record is what puts it second. A Day Away Kayak Tours launches from Kelly Park East on Merritt Island into the Banana River lagoon after sunset. Kayak, paddle, life vest, guide and gratuities are in the $75 (€67). The catch is size: up to 42 people per departure, which is a lot of paddles in one patch of water. Reviewers found February weak and point people to late spring and summer, near the new moon. Believe them.

4.7 (2,179 reviews)
The most-reviewed bio bay tour we found: 2,179 reviews at 4.7. Kayaking Puerto Rico leaves from Kayak Village in Las Croabas, paddles the mangrove channel into Laguna Grande, and includes the tandem kayak, snacks, drinks, insect repellent and gratuities. At $89 (€80) for two hours it's the priciest of the three Fajardo tours here, which is what holds it at third. Rules: age 6 and up (6 to 13 share an adult's kayak), 240 lb weight limit, a minimum of 6 people to run, up to 30. It cancels for unsafe conditions only. A weak glow doesn't count.

Clear-bottom kayaks, so the glow shows under you as well as around the paddle. Get Up And Go Kayaking launches from Haulover Canal at Mims, near Titusville, with up to 10 per group, and it rates 4.9 on 361 reviews. The price sinks it: $120 (€107) for what the header calls 90 minutes, and the itinerary calls one hour on the water. That's the worst value of the ten, by a distance. Fees and taxes are included. Not recommended if you're pregnant or have back problems. Gorgeous idea. Expensive hour.

Yokahu Kayak Trips runs out of Las Croabas into Laguna Grande, at $67 (€60) with kayak, gear, water, snacks and gratuities. Reviewers mention 6:45, 8 and 8:45 p.m. starts and about an hour of paddling; the page's own duration field is garbled. Age 6 and up, no pregnant travelers, up to 30.

Mosquito Bay is the big draw on Vieques, and this is the better-reviewed of the two Vieques tours here: 1,243 reviews, but a 4.5 rating, which is what drags it to eighth. The moon decides your night
Moonlight drowns the glow. Every operator we read says it, Cocoa Kayaking tells guests to book around the new moon, and the reviewers agree.
NASA's explainer gives the mechanics. The cycle from one new moon to the next takes about 29.5 days. A new moon rises and sets with the sun, so the night sky is dark. A full moon rises around sunset and sets around sunrise, which means it's up for every minute of every tour.
So aim for the week around a new moon. Here are the next ones, from the US Naval Observatory (dates in Universal Time; in Puerto Rico and Florida the December one falls on the evening of December 8):
New moons: November 9 and December 9, 2026; January 7, February 6 and March 8, 2027.
Summer 2027, for Florida's peak: June 4, July 4, August 2, August 31 and September 30.
Full moons to avoid: November 24 and December 24, 2026; July 18 and August 17, 2027.
Stuck with a bright week? Go late on the La Parguera boat, or pick a night a few days after the full moon and an early slot, before the moon is high. It's not the same, but it's better than nothing.
Season, rain and sargassum
Florida is seasonal. The operators put the peak in summer: July to October, or July to mid-October, with sightings possible into January. In the cooler months most of the light comes from comb jellies, which are fainter. I wouldn't fly to Florida in February for this. Reviewers on the Kelly Park tour found February weak.
Puerto Rico runs all year, but weather still dims it. Rain, cold and sargassum all cut the glow, and most Puerto Rico operators cancel only for unsafe weather, not for a weak bay. Refunds for a dull night aren't guaranteed.
Sargassum isn't a hypothetical. In August 2015 Puerto Rico's natural resources department, the DRNA, led an emergency cleanup at Laguna Grande after a fish die-off and a heavy buildup of the weed, with crews raking it out of the channel by hand.
And the La Parguera reviewers have a tip worth repeating: the glow is better after a sunny day.
Where the bio bays are
Laguna Grande, Fajardo. On Puerto Rico's northeast corner, and the bay with San Juan transfers on offer. Kayak only on the tours here. You paddle a mangrove channel into the lagoon, which sits in the Cabezas de San Juan nature reserve. Three of our ten, and the tours run to 30 people.
Mosquito Bay, Vieques. The famous one. It's inside the Vieques Bioluminescent Bay nature reserve, which a local trust co-manages with the DRNA, and in 2018 the two said studies there had found up to 175,000 of the glowing plankton per liter, the highest count recorded anywhere. That's their claim, not ours. The practical catch is getting there: you need to be on Vieques at night. The only Viator option from San Juan is an 11-hour day trip by ferry at $230 (€205), and we left it out.
La Parguera, southwest coast. The swim bay. If touching the glow is the point, come here.
Florida's Space Coast. The Banana River and Indian River lagoons around Merritt Island, Titusville and Cocoa Beach. Mims, near Titusville, is where the Haulover Canal tours launch. Mostly kayaks, often clear ones.
Europe: nothing we could find clears our bar. A West Cork night kayak in Ireland had seven reviews. Ireland's Lough Hyne starlight paddle isn't sold on either booking site we checked.
Kayak, clear kayak or boat
A regular kayak is the cheapest way in and works fine. You see the glow on the paddle and in the wake.
A clear kayak or canoe shows it under you too. It costs more: $120 (€107) for the Mims tour versus $75 (€67) for a regular kayak out of Kelly Park.
A boat with a swim is the La Parguera option. No paddling, and you're in the water.
Group size matters more than the boat. Up to 42 on the Kelly Park tour, 30 at Laguna Grande, against 10 on the Mims and Cocoa Beach trips. With 30 or more people on one departure, it's a crowd, not a quiet paddle. Pick small if you can.
Kids, health rules and safety
The rules vary a lot, so read them before you book:
Fajardo: minimum age 6 on all three tours here, kids 6 to 13 share an adult's kayak at Kayaking Puerto Rico, and there's a 240 lb weight limit.
Vieques Kayaks: no children under 5.
Cocoa Beach: single kayaks for 13 and up.
Chiliboats: height and weight limits, listed in its card.
Yokahu takes no pregnant travelers; the Mims clear-kayak tour isn't recommended in pregnancy or with back problems.
Laguna Grande is a real paddle, out and back through mangroves in the dark, and Pure Adventure won't refund you if you can't finish. If someone in your group has never kayaked, take a tandem.
From $57 (€51) for the Adventure Vieques clear canoe to $120 (€107) at Mims. Most sit at $65 to $90 (€58 to €80) for 1.5 to 2 hours. Gratuities are included on several, which is rarer than you'd think. On Vieques, add the ferry or flight and a hotel.
Every other bioluminescent kayak and boat tour we scored
The rest of the 15 bioluminescent kayak and boat tours we scored, best first. They cleared our bar but lost out on score, or on the three-per-city cap.
Near a new moon, on a clear night. In Florida, summer as well: operators put the peak at roughly July to October. The next new moons are November 9 and December 9, 2026 (Universal Time), per the US Naval Observatory.
Can you swim in the bioluminescent bays in Puerto Rico?
On the tours we found, only at La Parguera. Mareaito Charters' boat trip includes a swim with floats and snorkel gear. The Laguna Grande and Mosquito Bay tours are kayak or canoe only.
Which bio bay in Puerto Rico is best?
Mosquito Bay on Vieques has the biggest reputation, but you have to stay on the island. Laguna Grande in Fajardo is easiest from San Juan. La Parguera is the one where you can swim, and its Mareaito tour ranks first here.
Is a bioluminescent kayak tour worth it?
On a dark night in season, yes. Under a full moon or in a Florida winter, the glow can be faint, and most operators don't refund for a weak bay. Check the moon first.
Are bioluminescent tours OK for kids?
Mostly. Fajardo tours start at age 6, Vieques Kayaks at 5, and in Cocoa Beach under-13s paddle with an adult. A tandem kayak and a small group make it easier.
