Night Tours in Rome

#1: Rome by Night e-bike, 7.6 Dark by 5:11 p.m. in December 10 tours ranked

Rome is one of the few big cities where a night tour isn't a gimmick. The day crowds thin out and the ruins get floodlit. The city also eats dinner late, so an evening walk lines up with what Romans are doing anyway.

The ten tours below all cleared our bar on rating and reviews, and they're ordered by the site's Night Score. The top two tie at 7.6. One is an e-bike ride with dinner, the other a ghost walk that costs about half as much. Four of the ten are food tours, and three of those are in Trastevere. That's not an accident. Trastevere at 8 p.m. is the best argument for being out in Rome after dark.

What's missing matters too. No reseller "Colosseum by night" tour passed. The night bus tours didn't either. And the Vatican Museums have no night openings this season, so anything sold as a Vatican night tour is a late-afternoon slot or a walk outside the walls.

Rome by Night - Ebike Small Group Tour - Food and Wine

Night walking tours

7.6/10Night Score
  • From $68 (€61)
  • 4 hours
  • Starts: Evening
  • Small group
  • 4.9 (1,348 reviews)

It wins on range. Four hours on an e-bike gets you from Monti to the Capitoline, St. Peter's and the lit Colosseum in one evening, which no walking tour can match, and dinner and wine are in the price. At $68 (€61) that's about $17 (€15.20) an hour, cheap for what you get. A 4.9 from 1,348 reviews backs it up. The group caps at 15 with 10 riders per guide. Kids under 12 ride in a cargo bike or trailer with a parent, and under-2s can't come. It meets on Via Antonio Rosmini, a few minutes from Termini.

Good to know: Capped at 15 with 10 riders per guide; no children under 2, under-12s ride a cargo or trailer bike with a parent. Returns to the meeting point near Termini.

After dark: On a bike you cover Monti, the Capitoline, St. Peter's and the Colosseum lit up in one evening, with traffic far lighter than by day.

Rome Night Walking Tour: Ghosts, Legends & Haunted Rome

Ghost tours

7.6/10Night Score
  • From $34 (€31)
  • 2 hours
  • Starts: Evening
  • Small group
  • 4.9 (702 reviews)

The best ghost walk in Rome on our numbers, and it ties for first. It scores highest of the ten on the after-dark factor: Via Giulia and Via di Monserrato are close to empty at night, and the execution and plague stories need that. Two hours, $34 (€31), 4.9 from 702 reviews. You meet under the hooded Giordano Bruno statue in Campo de' Fiori and finish at Castel Sant'Angelo. The catch: turn up late and you get no refund. Groups cap at 20. The same Carpe Diem tour also sells on GetYourGuide with more reviews.

What it is: A Carpe Diem Tours ghost and dark-history walk from Campo de' Fiori through Via Giulia to Castel Sant'Angelo, with a ghost-hunter kit.

Good to know: Meets under the Giordano Bruno statue in Campo de' Fiori and ends at Castel Sant'Angelo, capped at 20; late arrivals get no refund. The same tour sells on GetYourGuide with more reviews, but that page could not be read today.

After dark: The back lanes of Via Giulia and Via di Monserrato are near empty after dark, which is what makes the executions and plague stories land.

Rome Twilight Trastevere Food Tour by Eating Europe

Night food tours

7.4/10Night Score
  • From $119 (€106)
  • about 4 hours
  • Starts: Late afternoon into evening
  • Small group
  • 4.9 (6,787 reviews)

The most proven tour on the page by a mile: 6,787 reviews at 4.9. What holds it at third is price. At $119 (€106) it costs nearly twice the Tour Guy's Trastevere walk, and the page doesn't even state a duration (reviewers say about four hours). You get 6 to 7 tastings, a sit-down pasta course and gelato, plus 4 to 6 drinks. It meets on Tiber Island, not the river bank, which trips people up. Groups cap at 12. If you want one big dinner out in Rome and don't mind the bill, this is it.

What it is: An Eating Europe dinner walk through Trastevere with 6 to 7 tastings, 4 to 6 drinks, a sit-down pasta course and gelato.

Good to know: Meets on Tiber Island, not the river bank; capped at 12, minimum 2. Children under 4 go free without food. The page shows $119 and $124.72 in two places; $119 is the booking-box price.

After dark: Trastevere's trattorias fill up after dark, so the walk eats where Romans eat dinner rather than at lunch counters.

Night food tours

7.3/10Night Score
  • From $68 (€61)
  • 3 hours
  • Starts: Evening
  • Small group
  • 4.9 (1,770 reviews)

Honestly, this is the better deal of the Trastevere dinner walks. Three hours, $68 (€61), and it ends in a real three-course dinner with wine and limoncello rather than a string of bites. The rating is the same 4.9 as Eating Europe's, on 1,770 reviews. It ranks just below because it's less proven and a touch less about the dark. It starts at Piazza Farnese, crosses the river and finishes on Viale di Trastevere, where trams and taxis are easy. Capped at 12.

7.2/10Night Score

  • 4.9 (409 reviews)

The cheapest good night tour in Rome: $28 (€25) for two and a half hours, which is $11 (€9.80) an hour and a perfect 10 on our value factor. It starts at Piazza di Pasquino by Navona, passes the Pantheon and Trevi and walks the Imperial Forums to the floodlit Colosseum. Everything is from outside. Pantheon entry isn't included, and it does not go into the Colosseum, whatever the photos suggest. 4.9 from 409 reviews, capped at 15. A first-night orientation walk, and a good one.

  • From $40 (€36)
  • 2.5 to 3 hours
  • Starts: Evening
  • Small group, 11+
  • 5.0 (295 reviews)

A perfect 5.0, but only 295 reviews, and that thinner record is what drops it to sixth. The route runs from the Vittoriano past the Pantheon and Trevi to the Spanish Steps, all from outside. $40 (€36) for 2.5 to 3 hours, groups of 12, ages 11 and up. Read the terms before you book. It's non-refundable and can't be changed, which is unusual in Rome and a real risk if your flight slips. The listing puts the meeting point on Via del Monte Oppio, so check it against your confirmation.

The only bar crawl on the list, and it's run by the same Carpe Diem crew as the ghost walk. Three hours in Monti, which is where Rome's bars actually fill up after dark, with wine, spritz, sambuca and limoncello included. The page doesn't say how many drinks, which I'd want to know at $74 (€66). Up to 22 people, so it's a party, not a tasting. Games and karaoke are part of it. It finishes at the Julius Caesar statue on Via dei Fori Imperiali, with the Forums lit behind you. Adults only in spirit, if not on paper.

Good food, priced like Eating Europe's tour without the review count. $102 (€91) for 3.5 hours, 5 stops, 10-plus tastes and 6 drinks, 4.9 from 790 reviews. It starts in Piazza di San Cosimato, the Trastevere square locals use, and ends at Piazza Trilussa. The page is blunt that it's not for children or non-drinkers, and it doesn't suit vegans or celiacs. There's a sunset departure and a shorter 6:15 option. You get a LivTours driver-guide, up to 6 guests and a Prosecco and beer aperitivo. The 6 p.m. start from Piazza della Repubblica catches the Colosseum and Circus Maximus at dusk, then the Ghetto and Navona. Most sights go past the window. Over-18s only. A short walk, 90 minutes, over the Capitoline from Piazza Venezia and down along the Forums to the Colosseum at dusk. That route is the best ancient-Rome view the city has after dark, which is why it scores well on the night factor. It ranks last because 4.8 on 312 reviews rates lower than the rest, and $45 (€40) for an hour and a half isn't cheap. Outdoors only, capped at 15. The URL says adults only, the page sets no age limit and sells kids' tickets.

What Rome is actually like after dark

The ruins close early. From 25 October 2026 to 28 February 2027 the Colosseum, Forum and Palatine shut at 4:30 p.m., with last entry at 3:30, according to colosseo.it. In November the sun sets at 4:50. So for half the year you can't be inside the Colosseum when it's dark, tour or no tour. The Vatican Museums stop letting people in at 6 p.m. and close at 8.

What stays open is the street. Piazza Navona and the Pantheon portico are lit and free all night. Trevi is the odd one: since February 2026 the inner area by the basin costs non-residents $2.20 (€2), from 9 a.m. (11:30 a.m. on Mondays and Fridays) to 10 p.m., last entry 9 p.m. After that the fountain stays free to look at, and it's calmer.

Romans go out in Trastevere and Monti. Dinner starts late. A table at 7 p.m. is a tourist table.

Ghost walk, food tour or bike: how to pick

If it's your first night, do a walk. The Carpe Diem small-group walk covers Navona to the Colosseum for $28 (€25) and gives you the map of the centre in your head for the rest of the trip.

Ghosts here are mostly history: executions at Campo de' Fiori, the Tiber, plague. Rome doesn't trade on haunted-house stuff the way Edinburgh or New Orleans do, so treat the ghost walk as a dark-history walk with good lanes. That's a compliment.

Food tours are where Rome beats most cities on this site. Three of the four we ranked are Trastevere dinner walks. You only need one. The Tour Guy version is the value pick, Eating Europe the safe bet with almost 7,000 reviews.

The e-bike is for people who want to see a lot and are happy on cobbles in traffic. I'd skip the golf cart unless walking is hard for someone in your group. For more on how these formats compare across cities, see our night food tours and ghost tours pages.

The free version: a self-guided night walk

You can do most of what the walking tours do for free. Start at the Giordano Bruno statue in Campo de' Fiori. Walk down Via dei Cappellari or Via di Monserrato to Via Giulia, which is long, straight and very quiet after 9 p.m. Cross Ponte Sisto into Trastevere for dinner, then come back over the river to Piazza Navona and the Pantheon.

The second loop is the ancient one. Climb the Cordonata to Piazza del Campidoglio, then go round the back of the Senate building, where the terraces look straight down over the Forum, lit. Walk Via dei Fori Imperiali to the Colosseum. It takes about as long as the twilight tour and costs nothing.

What you lose is the stories. The ghost walk's guide is the product. The Forum view isn't.

Getting back late

The metro is the thing to plan around. All three lines run their last trains at 11:30 p.m. Sunday to Thursday and 1:30 a.m. on Friday and Saturday nights, per Roma Servizi per la Mobilità. Line C now reaches Colosseo. A BIT ticket is $1.70 (€1.50) for 100 minutes, and you can tap a contactless card at the gate instead of buying one.

After the metro stops, ATAC runs a night bus network. It works, slowly. Most tours here end in the centre, at Castel Sant'Angelo, Viale di Trastevere or Piazza Venezia, and from there walking back is often quicker.

For taxis, use the white licensed cars from a rank or book through an app. Don't get into a car someone offers you outside a bar. See our night tour safety guide for the general rules.

When to go: darkness, cold and summer nights

In December it's dark by 5:11 p.m. In June you wait until 9:20. That swing changes everything. A 7 p.m. walk in winter is fully at night, and in summer it's mostly golden-hour daylight. The table below has every month.

Rome nights are mild. The coldest month in our weather data, January, averages a low of 39°F (3.8°C). July and August lows sit around 69 to 70°F (21°C), which is why summer is the season for night walking: the day highs are in the 90s. November is the wettest month, with about 13 rain days.

Summer and early autumn are when the official night visit to the Colosseum runs. In 2026 it was Tuesdays and Thursdays from 14 July, and Italy's culture ministry lists it ending on 22 October. Dates for 2027 aren't out yet. Our Colosseum night tour page has the details. In December the Christmas lights go up on Via del Corso and ATAC reroutes its night buses around them.

What to skip

Skip the night bus tours. The Big Bus and Tootbus night routes in Rome rated 3.4 when our researcher checked, well under the bar.

Skip the reseller "Colosseum by evening" tours too, unless you've read the fine print. City Wonders' version rated 4.3 and puts the arena floor behind an upgrade. Discover Rome's "Colosseum by Night" rated 4.1, and its own small print says the evening option has no underground. The real thing is the official summer visit, sold only on ticketing.colosseo.it.

And a near miss: the after-hours Catacombs and Capuchin Crypt tour starts at 5:15 p.m. and scored 5.5, which put it just outside the ranked list.
