A night food tour is dinner. A long, wandering dinner, split over four to seven stops, with somebody who knows which stall does the good dim sum and which bar pours the vermut. That's the product.
We scored 27 evening food tours across our cities, and the top of the list is very Asian. Bangkok takes three of the twelve spots, Tokyo three, Rome three, and Florence, Barcelona and Singapore one each. The winner, a tuk-tuk food tour across Bangkok that starts at 7 p.m., is a food tour where the night really is the point: Chinatown's stalls, the flower market and the floodlit old city are all better after dark.
For most of the others the food would taste the same at lunch. Our score knows that, which is why a 5.0-rated Shinjuku crawl with 3,633 reviews still sits second. Lunch doesn't have the neon.

The 12 best night food tours, ranked
Ranked by Night Score across every city we cover, with no more than three from one place. Night Score = 30% rating, 10% review count, 20% price per hour, 40% how much the night is the point. How we score
The best all-round score of any food tour we rated: 4.9 on 2,925 reviews, a fair $77 (€68) for four hours, and a route that only makes sense at night. Bangkok Food Tours meets at Samyan MRT exit 2 at 7 p.m., then goes by tuk-tuk to Banthat Thong Road, Chinatown, the Pak Khlong Talat flower market and the lit-up old city, finishing with a drink at Secrets Bar. Tastings add up to dinner, plus one beer or soft drink. Groups max out at 10. The inclusions list says hotel pickup; there isn't any. Drop-off at selected hotels, yes.

What it is: Bangkok Food Tours runs a tuk-tuk food tour from Samyan to Chinatown, Banthat Thong Road, the Pak Khlong Talat flower market and the old city, with a drink at Secrets Bar.
Good to know: Tastings enough for dinner, one Thai beer or soft drink, tuk-tuk, guide, water and hotel drop-off (selected hotels) are included; there is no hotel pickup despite the inclusions list. Meets at Samyan MRT exit 2, capped at 10; private option from 91.89.
After dark: It runs from 7 p.m. into the late evening, when Banthat Thong Road's stalls, Chinatown and the flower market are open and the old city is floodlit.

A perfect 5.0 on 3,633 reviews, the only perfect rating on this list. Ninja Food Tours walks you through Nishi-Shinjuku, Kabukicho, Golden Gai and Omoide Yokocho, three or four izakaya, 14+ tastings and three drinks, 3.5 hours, $91 (€81). So why only second? It runs at lunch too, and the food is the same then, so it scores 6 on darkness. Reviewers put the evening start at 5 p.m.: pick that one. Meets at Kirin City Shinjuku Higashi, though the host may change it. Up to 10 people.

Good to know: 14+ tastings and 3 drinks are included; an optional 3:30 p.m. sake tasting costs 29.99 extra. Meets at Kirin City Shinjuku Higashi (the host may change it), ends by SoftBank Nishi-Shinjuku, capped at 10; book the evening slot, since a lunch tour runs too.
After dark: The evening departure catches Kabukicho, Golden Gai and Omoide Yokocho lit up and full, though the food is the same at lunch.

The most reviews of any tour on this list: 10,405, at 4.9. Traveling Tokyo covers much the same ground as the Ninja tour (Omoide Yokocho, Kabukicho, Golden Gai) with 13 dishes at four very different places: a stall, an izakaya, a traditional eatery and a gastrobar. Two drinks included. It's three hours for $85 (€76), so a bit more per hour than Ninja. The page lists no clock times and a lunch slot shows up in the calendar, so check you've picked an evening. Meet by the AOKI shop near Starbucks at Shinjuku west exit. You'll need WhatsApp. Up to 12.

Rome's big one. Eating Europe has 6,787 reviews at 4.9 for this dinner walk through Trastevere: 6 to 7 tastings, 4 to 6 drinks, a sit-down pasta course and gelato. It's $119 (€106), and the page doesn't say how long it lasts; reviewers say about four hours. The page also shows a second price, $125 (€111), on its availability card; the booking box says $119 (€106). Price is what holds it to fourth. Meet on Tiber Island itself, not the riverbank, which trips people up. Max 12, minimum 2. Children under 4 go free if they don't eat.

After dark: Trastevere's trattorias fill up after dark, so the walk eats where Romans eat dinner rather than at lunch counters.

Chinatown on foot, and cheaper than the tuk-tuk tour. MagicalTrip does seven stops on Yaowarat with 15+ tastings, some of them Michelin-listed street food, plus one beer or juice. Three hours, $60 (€53), meeting and finishing at Wat Mangkon MRT exit 3. Capped at 8. It ranks fifth because 625 reviews is a much thinner record than the leaders have, not because anything's wrong with it: still 4.9. Vegans and anyone gluten-free should skip it. The page says so.

The cheapest of the big Trastevere dinner walks, at $68 (€61). The Tour Guy starts at Piazza Farnese, crosses the river, does deli tastings and street food, then sits you down for a three-course dinner with wine, limoncello and gelato. Three hours, up to 12, ends on Viale di Trastevere. Rated 4.9 on 1,770 reviews. It beats Eating Europe on value, loses on review count, and that's about the whole difference between sixth and fourth. If you're watching money in Rome, this is the one.

Starts at sunset in the Oltrarno and runs into the evening, when Piazza Santo Spirito fills up. Eating Europe packs in 9 to 10 Tuscan tastings, four wines, a Prosecco toast, gelato and a Negroni-making lesson, which is a fun extra. Rated 4.9 on 6,273 reviews. The problem is the price: $125 (€111) for 3.5 hours is the second-highest hourly rate on this list, and that's what pushes it to seventh. Hotel transfers and extra drinks aren't included. Max 13, minimum 2, ends back on the piazza.

The cheapest good night food tour we found: $55 (€49) for three hours on Yaowarat Road, where the stalls only trade after dark. Bangkok Food Tours meets at 6 p.m. at the Bangkok Centre Hotel by Hua Lamphong MRT exit 4 and serves about 12 tastings, dim sum to peppery pork soup to cockles, with a pass by Wat Traimit. It scores well on darkness and value; 208 reviews is what holds it at eighth. Read the small print. It's non-refundable, there's no vegetarian or halal version, and if you can't eat seafood, don't book it.

The splurge. MagicalTrip's Shinjuku dinner does seasonal omakase nigiri at a sushi counter, then an A5 wagyu yakiniku dinner and dessert, with a walk through Kabukicho and past the Godzilla head in between. Two drinks, guide and photos included, vegetarian menus available, max 7. Rated 4.9 on 1,418 reviews. It's $141 (€126) for 3.5 hours, the most expensive per hour on this list, which is why it's ninth. It's a fancy dinner with a short neon walk. If that's what you want, fine. The drinking one. Devour Italy does five Trastevere bars and eateries with 10+ tastes and six drinks over 3.5 hours, starting from Piazza di San Cosimato and finishing at Piazza Trilussa. Barcelona eats late, so this is the right city for a night food walk. What a night food tour is
Four to seven stops, a walk between each, and enough food by the end that you won't want dinner. That last part matters. The good ones say so on the page: Bangkok Food Tours calls its tastings enough for dinner, MagicalTrip says the same, and the Rome tours end with a sit-down pasta course or a three-course meal.
Drinks are usually in. Two or three in Tokyo, four in Barcelona, four to six on the Eating Europe Trastevere walk, six on Devour's. Groups are small: where a cap is listed, it's 7 to 13 people.
What makes it a night tour and not just a food tour is the place. Yaowarat's stalls set up after dark. Golden Gai and Omoide Yokocho are tiny alleys that are lit up and full after dark. Trastevere's trattorias fill at the Roman dinner hour. Barcelona doesn't really start eating until late. In those places the evening slot is the point.
What separates a good one from a dud
The slot. Several of the best Tokyo tours run at lunch too, and the Viator pages hide the clock times behind a picker. Ninja Food Tours has an 11:30 a.m. departure. Traveling Tokyo shows a lunch slot. Book the evening or you've paid for a different tour.
Is it dinner or a snack? Count the tastings. Under ten for $100 (€89) or more is thin.
Does it start before dark? London's one night food tour on our list, Eating London's Twilight Soho, starts at 4:45 p.m. per its page and didn't make our top twelve. Vienna's private after-dark food tour starts at 4 p.m. Both scored low on darkness.
Lisbon's fado tours didn't make it either. The three we scored landed at 5.8, 5.0 and 4.4. If you want fado, I'd just book a fado house. If you want a food tour, book a food tour.
And read the diet notes. The Bangkok Chinatown walk has no vegetarian or halal option and won't work if you can't eat seafood. Devour Rome isn't for vegans or celiacs. MagicalTrip's Chinatown tour can't do vegan or gluten-free. The wagyu dinner, oddly, offers vegetarian menus.
Where the best ones are
Bangkok is the best night food city on our list, and it's cheap: the three ranked tours run $55 to $77 (€49 to €68). Tokyo has the highest ratings, and they're all in Shinjuku. Rome means Trastevere, three tours deep.
After that it thins out. Florence has the Oltrarno sunset walk. Barcelona has one tapas night that clears the bar. Singapore has the river-to-hawker walk.
Venice, London, Mexico City, Vienna, Prague, Berlin and Lisbon all have evening food tours we scored, but none ranked here. The best of them, a Venice sunset cicchetti tour and the Eating London Soho walk, scored 6.7 and 6.5.
What they cost
From $55 (€49) in Bangkok to $141 (€126) for the Shinjuku sushi and wagyu dinner. Most of Europe sits around $68 to $125 (€61 to €111). Tokyo's izakaya crawls are $85 to $91 (€76 to €81).
Two traps. Some prices are only the guide fee: a Shibuya bar hop we scored lists $39 (€35), and its page says to budget about $38 (€34; ¥6,000) in cash for food and drink on top. Our ranked twelve all include the food. And sale prices come and go. The Barcelona tapas night is $80 (€71) today, normally $100 (€89).
Tips aren't included on the Singapore walk. Assume the same elsewhere unless the page says otherwise.
The free version: eat on your own
The walk is free. The food isn't, but you pick it.
In Bangkok, take the MRT to Wat Mangkon, come up into Chinatown and walk Yaowarat Road after dark. In Singapore, Lau Pa Sat's Satay Street at 18 Raffles Quay runs from 7 p.m. to 3 a.m. on weekdays and from 3 p.m. to 3 a.m. at weekends, according to the hawker centre's own site. That's where the Singapore tour ends anyway.
What a guide adds is ordering. Which stall, which dish, what's in the soup. If you're happy pointing, skip the tour.
Kids, drinking ages and diets
Most of these are fine for older kids who'll try things. Eating Europe lets under-4s come free if they don't eat. The Singapore walk has a minimum age of 7. The Barcelona tapas night isn't recommended under 14, and Devour Rome says it isn't for children at all.
Drinks are where it gets fiddly. The drinking age is 20 in Japan and Thailand, and 18 for alcohol on the Barcelona tour. Teenagers get soft drinks.
By our Night Score, the Bangkok Street Food Tuk-Tuk Tour at Night, at 8.4. It's rated 4.9 on 2,925 reviews, costs $77 (€68) for four hours from a 7 p.m. start, and the tastings add up to dinner.
Are night food tours worth it?
Usually, if you count them as dinner. The ranked tours serve enough to replace a meal and include drinks, for $55 to $141 (€49 to €126). In cities where the night food scene is the draw, like Bangkok's Chinatown or Shinjuku's alleys, the evening slot is clearly better.
Should I book a lunch or evening food tour in Tokyo?
Evening. The Shinjuku tours run both, but Golden Gai, Omoide Yokocho and Kabukicho are lit up and full after dark. Reviewers put the Ninja Food Tours evening start at 5 p.m.; check the time before you pay.
Can vegetarians do a night food tour?
Some. Check the page first. The Bangkok Chinatown night walk has no vegetarian option, MagicalTrip's Chinatown tour can't do vegan, and Devour Rome isn't for vegans. MagicalTrip's Shinjuku sushi and wagyu dinner offers vegetarian menus.
Do night food tours include drinks?
The ranked ones do: from one beer or soft drink in Bangkok to six drinks on Devour's Trastevere walk. Extra drinks cost more, and the drinking age is 20 in Japan and Thailand.
