The animals don't care about your schedule. That's the whole deal with a night wildlife tour.
We scored 20 tours where the point is to find animals after dark, and the list skews hard toward Costa Rica. Six of the eight ranked here are rainforest or cloud forest walks around La Fortuna and Monteverde: a guide, a flashlight, sometimes a spotting scope, two hours on muddy trails looking for frogs, snakes, sleeping birds and, in Monteverde, the odd sloth or kinkajou. The other two are in Asia. One is a bamboo-bike ride across the river from Bangkok that ends with fireflies. The other is a hotel transfer to the Singapore Night Safari.
Three tours tie at the top on 8.1. Honestly, the gap between first and sixth is small, and the real choices are boring ones: do you have a car, how big is the group, and is the reserve fee in the price or not.

5.0 (266 reviews)
A perfect 5.0 from 266 reviewers, the most of any 5.0 walk in La Fortuna. That rating is what puts it first in a three-way tie. Papa's Place is a family-run property about 2.6 km southeast of La Fortuna, and the walk takes 1 hour 40 minutes on its private trails for tree frogs, snakes and insects. Flashlights, entry and a certified guide are in the $52 (€46) price; transport isn't, so book a taxi. The catch is crowding. Groups go up to 20, and a reviewer mentions several groups sharing one slot. Umbrellas are handed out in light rain.

What it is: A guided night walk with flashlights on the private trails at Papa's Place, a family-run property just outside La Fortuna.
Good to know: Flashlights, entry and a certified guide are included; transport is not. Up to 20 per group, and a reviewer reports crowding when several groups share a slot; it runs in light rain with umbrellas offered.
After dark: The walk exists to find tree frogs, snakes and insects that hide by day and are only active at night.

The odd one out, and it earns its spot on value. Three to four hours for $54 (€48), with a boat across the Chao Phraya, a bamboo bike, a Thai dinner, hotel pickup and a boat ride to watch the fireflies of Bang Krachao. Fireflies only show in the dark, so it scores a full 10 on that. Rated 4.9 on 243 reviews. Bamboo Bicycle Tours caps groups at 8 and meets at Cafe Amazon by Wat Khlong Toei Nok. Fireflies peak May to December. One reviewer says the bikes are badly lit once it's dark, so bring a small light.

Good to know: Bike, boat, Thai dinner, water, guide and hotel pickup are included; passport details are needed for insurance. Meets at Café Amazon by Wat Khlong Toei Nok and returns there, capped at 8; the page gives no start time, and one reviewer warns the bikes are poorly lit in the dark.
After dark: Fireflies only show after dark, and the tour is timed to cycle Bang Krachao at sunset and reach the firefly boat ride at nightfall.

Ties for first, and it's the one I'd book if I wanted a fixed time. Anura Ecological Park runs it on its own trails at El Abanico, with slots at 6 p.m. and 8:15 p.m. Two hours for $50 (€45), park entry, walking sticks and flashlights included, which makes it cheaper per hour than Papa's Place. Rated 5.0 on 213 reviews. The late walk ends around 10:15 p.m. and the host says to book your taxi back in advance. The page gives two different group caps, 8 and 16, so don't count on the small one.

Six people per guide. Nobody on this list runs a smaller shared group, and Nasua Tours brings a spotting scope too, which matters in the cloud forest where the sloths and kinkajous are up in the canopy. It has 386 reviews at 4.8, the most of any walk ranked here, and that track record keeps it fourth. The $43 (€38) price is not the real price: the page contradicts itself on the $15 (€13.40) refuge entry, so plan to pay it. Transport isn't included. It gets cold at the refuge, so bring a layer.

The no-car option in La Fortuna. Wildlife Tours Costa Rica picks you up from town-center hotels 30 to 45 minutes before the 5:30 p.m. start at the Mirador El Silencio trails, near Arenal Volcano National Park, and drops you back after. Trail entry, guide and lights are in the $60 (€54). It's 2.5 hours, so the price per hour is fair. A 4.8 on 367 reviews puts it just behind the three 5.0-ish leaders. Groups go up to 15. Dinner, water and tips are extra, and it isn't wheelchair accessible.

The honest price. Three Brothers Tours lists transport and the $13 (€11.60) refuge entry as included in its $35 (€31), so what you see is what you pay, and nothing else here does that for so little. That's why it scores 8.5 on value. It starts at 5:30 p.m. in the Monteverde Wildlife Refuge, two hours, 7 people max, with a scope and the guide's help taking phone photos through it. Rated 4.8, but on 116 reviews, and the thinner record is what holds it at sixth. With kids, this is the early slot to take.

A night walk on a coffee farm. Cafe Ancestros, in Los Tornos about 15 minutes' drive from Monteverde, runs its own small-group walk at 6:45 p.m., two hours, up to 8 people, $35 (€31) with lower child rates. It rates 4.9, the best of the Monteverde three. Only 77 reviews, though, and that's what drops it to seventh. The page has no list of what's included, so ask. You need your own way there. Reviewers say rainy or very still nights bring fewer sightings, which is true everywhere but worth hearing from people who went.

This is really a ride to the zoo. Wandoras collects you from your hotel, takes you to Mandai's Night Safari, and covers admission, the park's tram and a guide for $84 (€75). The park opens at 6 p.m. The animals are the park's, not the tour's, and the plain ticket is $45 (€41; S$58) with the tram included. So you're paying about $39 (€35) for a shared van and a guide, in groups of up to 25. Rated 4.8 on 112 reviews. Worth it if you hate the trip to Mandai. Otherwise buy the ticket.

What a night wildlife tour actually is
A walk in the dark with someone who knows where to point the light. That's most of it.
In Costa Rica the format barely changes from one operator to the next. You meet at a private reserve or refuge around dusk, someone hands you a flashlight, and a guide leads a group along trails for about two hours. They look for tree frogs on leaves, snakes curled in branches, birds asleep on perches, tarantulas in burrows. In Monteverde the better guides carry a spotting scope for the animals up high. Sightings are never guaranteed, and every operator says so somewhere on the page.
Fireflies and night zoos are different. The Bangkok tour is a bike ride and a dinner that ends at the fireflies. The Night Safari is a zoo that opens after dark, and the tours there sell the trip, not the animals.
What none of these is: a show. A slow night can mean two hours looking at wet leaves and one frog. Go in expecting that and a good night feels like a bonus.
What separates a good one from a dud
Group size first. A guide can only point a light at one branch, and with 20 people the back half of the group sees the back of somebody's head. Nasua caps at 6, Three Brothers at 7, Cafe Ancestros and the Bangkok ride at 8. Papa's Place goes to 20 and still ranks first on reviews alone, which tells you how good the guiding must be. I'd still pick a smaller one.
Timing. The walks that start right at dusk, like Mirador El Silencio and Three Brothers at 5:30 p.m., catch the changeover, when the day animals settle and the night ones come out.
A spotting scope, in the cloud forest. Without one you'll see a dark lump in a tree and be told it's a sloth.
Then there are the combos. Don Juan's chocolate-and-night tours in La Fortuna and Monteverde spend half the evening at a tasting table and scored lowest of the 20, at 5.9 and 5.6. Fine if you want chocolate. They're not wildlife tours. The long-drive dinner walks are similar: La Tigra, 45 minutes out of La Fortuna, scored 7.5 and didn't make the top three for its town.
Where the best ones are
La Fortuna has the deepest bench: ten walks scored, and the town's top two are both rated 5.0. Nights are warm, around 68 to 72°F (20 to 22°C), and entry is usually in the price. Frogs and snakes are the main event.
Monteverde is up in the cloud forest, cooler at about 62 to 65°F (17 to 18.5°C), and the listings lean on sloths, kinkajous and tarantulas. The walks are cheaper on paper, but many pages are vague about the refuge fee. The Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve also runs its own night walk, about 2.5 hours, 10 people max, English only, starting in a 6 to 6:30 p.m. window. It doesn't publish a price and isn't sold on Viator, so it isn't ranked.
Bangkok has the firefly ride. Singapore has the Night Safari, open daily 6 p.m. to midnight with last entry at 11:15 p.m.; our Night Safari page covers how to do it without a tour.
That's it for now. The rest of our 32 cities have no night wildlife tour that clears our bar.
What they cost
Costa Rica walks run $35 to $60 (€31 to €54) per person for about two hours. The trap is the reserve fee. In Monteverde the Wildlife Refuge charges $13 to $15 (€11.60 to €13.40) and several pages contradict themselves on whether it's included, so Nasua's $43 (€38) is closer to $58 (€52) once you pay the gate. Three Brothers at $35 (€31) includes it.
In La Fortuna the fee is usually included. Transport usually isn't, so add a taxi for Papa's Place and Anura.
The Singapore transfer tour is the expensive one at $84 (€75), and the Night Safari ticket alone is $45 (€41; S$58) for an adult, $32 (€29; S$41) for a child. Tips are extra almost everywhere. Carry small bills.
Safety and what to wear
Closed shoes. Not sandals, not on wet trails with snakes about. Long trousers, bug spray and a rain jacket. Every Costa Rica walk runs in the rain and stops for lightning, and reviewers repeat that kit list over and over because people keep turning up in flip-flops.
Monteverde gets chilly, so add a fleece there. La Fortuna doesn't need one.
Keep your light where the guide says and don't grab at anything. In Singapore, the Night Safari bans flash photography. Getting back is the part people forget: several Costa Rica reserves are on dark roads out of town, so sort your ride before you go. More in our night tour safety guide and what to bring.
Night wildlife tours with kids
This is the night tour kids like most. Frogs beat ghost stories.
None of the eight ranked here sets a minimum age, and most of the Costa Rica walks have child rates. The trick is the start time. Take a dusk slot (Three Brothers or Mirador El Silencio at 5:30 p.m., Anura at 6 p.m.) and you're done before a small child falls apart. Avoid Anura's 8:15 p.m. walk, which ends around 10:15 p.m. A small group helps too, because a short person at the back of 20 sees nothing.
Every other night wildlife tours and night safari we scored
The rest of the 20 night wildlife tours and night safaris we scored, best first. They cleared our bar but lost out on score, or on the three-per-city cap.
By our Night Score, three tie at 8.1: the Night Walk with Papa's Place and Anura's small-group walk, both in La Fortuna and both rated 5.0, and the Bangkok firefly bamboo-bike tour. Papa's Place ranks first on its 266 reviews.
Is a night walk in Costa Rica worth it?
Yes, if you expect a slow two-hour walk with a flashlight rather than a guaranteed animal show. The best ones cost $35 to $60 (€31 to €54), and for frogs, snakes and sleeping birds the night is the only time to go.
Which is better for a night walk, La Fortuna or Monteverde?
La Fortuna is warmer and the price usually includes entry. Monteverde is cooler cloud forest, and its listings promise sloths, kinkajous and tarantulas more often. Check whether the refuge fee is included before you compare prices.
What should I wear on a night wildlife tour?
Closed shoes, long trousers, bug spray and a rain layer. Add a fleece in Monteverde, where nights drop to about 62°F (17°C). Most walks provide the flashlight.
Can kids go on night wildlife tours?
Yes. None of our ranked tours sets a minimum age. Pick a dusk start, like a 5:30 or 6 p.m. walk, and a small group, so children can see what the guide finds.
